Seems like I will have to look into my rear diff this week. My truck keeps making this 'woooooo' sound when I have my foot on the gas (constant speed). When letting off the gas the sound disappears. Seems like bad ring/pinion alignment due to worn bearings.

Problem: an OEM bearing set costs around $270 over here but my mind tells me that, usually, factories use standard bearing sizes. Does anybody know the bearing symbols for the rear diff so that I could buy an exact replacement instead of wasting money? Most differential bearings cost around $100 but I need to know the bearing symbol. Thanks a lot in advance.

EDIT: Seems like I've found them in this post (below). Are they correct then for a 1996 LX450, no lockers?

Hmmmm... it seems that the link above refers to bearings in differentials with lockers. Does anybody know the bearing symbol for non-locked differentials?

Come on guys, just go to the garage and pick up the old bearings from that pile of junk in the corner and read the symbol. It can be Koyo, Timken, SKF, whatever... This is my only chance of getting the thing done...

Thanks.

Sorry Mike; got nothin' for ya.

Maybe call one of those manufacturers and ask them??

BTW, have you driven without the rear driveshaft to see if that eliminates/isolates the noise?

Sorry, no personal experience with this yet.

Have you tried looking it up on any parts sites?

I checked napaonline.com, they list the following:

Rear Diff Bearing with Locker: 32012X (the numbers match the thread you referenced)
Rear Diff Bearing without Locker: 32010X
Rear Pinion Bearing (Same for both): 30306C

How many miles does your rig have BTW?

Thanks for the information.

CJF,
calling manufacturers is rather out of the question. The reps over here don't have such information and really don't care about the customer. Yes. I have driven without the driveshaft and this is it. The sound is so pronounced and characteristic that anyone can hear it. With the driveshaft, when I have my foot on the pedal, there's the constant 'woooooooo'. When I raise my foot, there's silence.

Danbino,
I am from the other side of the globe so I don't know the websites of American part sites. But thanks for these symbols, they will help me a lot. My rig has around 116K miles.

Tools R Us,
I will try to get in touch with Kurt to get some confirmation, thanks.

Thanks to everyone.

Off the top of my head here... I do have a spreadsheet for all the bearings for all Landcruisers but its on another computer ;)

Carriers NON E-Lock
Timken 32010X - this is a set, it is the 50mm ID bearing used in 80's and ARB's

Carrier E-Locked
Elocker units use a much bigger carrier bearings that is sadly only available from Koyo (so Toyota for most). I have the Koyo number if you would like to try and source it from a bearing house.

Pinion:
Timk: 30306 & Timk 30308

Let me know if there is more you need... I can bust out the spreadsheet. It has most Timken, Koyo, Nachi & SKF converstions for the LC Applications :D

So I have found the bearings, but just in case I would like to ask you for confirmation of the numbers and sizes. As I understand, I need 4 bearings total. Two identical bearings for both sides of the carrier and two different bearings for the pinion shaft. The inner one is larger, the outer one is smaller. Please look below and confirm.

Prices are:

$22 X2 for carrier bearings, 32010
$17.5 for outer (smaller) pinion bearing, 30306
$24.5 for inner (bigger) pinion bearing, 30308

Bearings made by http://www.ntn.co.jp/

Reasonable price? What do you think?

For my reference, are the numbers you posted above (in red) the NTN part numbers??? When you get the actual bearings in your hand do me a favor and post the numbers off of each bearing and race... I don't have alot of the NTN stuff in my spreadsheet (most OE was Koyo or Nachi and aftermarket are all Timken, though Toyota used NTN in alot of other apps) Thanks!

Changing the rear diff. oil and greasing the U-joints solved my "wooooo" sound at 70 mph. You might want to try it prior to a bearing change.

this is all mis information the 32010x is not for 4x4 . tacoma 4x4s have 52 mm jounals!!!! If you have a 4x4 all the above info is BS
