I just picked up an 82 FJ40 and had it looked over thoroughly today and the good news is that she's a beaty. The bad news is I need a fuel pump and rear Diff bearings. Any suggestions on where I can pick up the bearings. I saw them on CCOT, but they sell the front along w/ the rears as a pair. Do i have to change the fronts when i change the ears? And when changing the rear bearings is it a good time to do any modifications? You know what i mean, "since your changing the rear bearings anyhow you might as well do this while your in there? Is this one of thos deals, or not really?

Check and see if Kurt has the bearings, cruiseroutfitters.com. I personally do not like ccot. good luck.

Kurt has em - got some from him not long ago.

This is not a job I would recommend doing for someone who has never done it before. It takes some special tools and a lot of attention to detail and it will spank you if you aren't paying attention.

Just get a good used differential. Probably cheaper than a bearing kit.

Don't you worry I dont plan on doing this. Don't want to get spanked. Am having it done by a shop. I just buy the parts and pay them to put it on. I know it's not the "MUD" way. But it's my way.

How did your shop determine the bearings to be bad? Also, by "rear diff bearings" are they the carrier or pinion bearings? I find it interesting that they will allow you to supply your own parts for them to perform the work. This is a very strange practice for a shop unless they do not warranty their work with your parts.

As stated earlier it will probably be much cheaper to purchase an entire 3rd member from a board member and install that.

Sale $129.95

This is for 1 front or 1 rear rebuild kit. The kit fits either the front or the rear.

You sure the mechanic didn't mean rear axle bearings? Another solution is to swap the front and rear diffs since the front is only used when in 4x4.

Oh and CCOT is a good vendor to deal with, just like Kurt!

i just got some from kurt about a week ago. only guy i've bought parts from because i have been happy everytime.
replacing them is a beast of a job, its probably is cheaper to have a auto repair shop do it becaue i dropped a bunch of cash into the tools, but i knew the only way to really learning and getting to know my cruiser was to do it myself. but its a PITA

while your there...put in an ARB.

Most shops don't do business this way. If they do a job, they buy the parts because they make money on the mark up and they have to guarantee their parts and labor. If shop I worked at did a job like that they would charge you more for what they lose on the parts and not guarantee the job. Either way, you pay the same.

I had my rear differnetial rebuilt with all new bearings for 150.00. The shop guarateed the work and I provided the bearings. I would replace all the bearings and have all the gears inspected. The price wont go up for labor they need to take it all apart anyway so replace as much of the inside as you want to pay for.
