Installing a new head unit with front and rear cameras. Dry fitted the rear camera and got it all working by tapping into the reverse circuit and now am trying to button it all up to finish.

I have the camera mounted above the license plate and have snaked the wire thru a small opening next to one of the license plate lights. I've removed The tailgate cover so I can put the wiring through the rubber boot that connects the tailgate to the body so that I can then run the wiring to the right rear quarter panel and then ultimately follow the path to the front of the vehicle.

All of that to ask what I hope is a simple question... As the wiring goes through the boot to the body and then into the quarter panel area does it stay in a conduit that is inside the body or a conduit that sits underneath the body? I think it is the latter but hope someone can confirm. Thanks for your help!

Could you post up some photos of what you've done up to this point??

You bet. However, in taking some pix I'm pretty sure I answered my own question. On mobile so hopefully these come thru okay.

Camera with wire going into gap between license plate light and lift gate.

Where I want to go

Grommet that I want to pass into so I can follow the sunroof drain and other conduit there to the front of the truck and ultimately to the back of the new head unit. Sorry for the gross dog hair. It gets vacuumed out today.

Taking the pix pretty much answered my questions. Pulled the boot out from the body side
and stuck a pencil thru for reference.

First time lowering the spare tire in seven years of ownership but that let me see what was going on under neath. There's another rubber plug with wires coming out.

Pulled that plug out, removed the pencil, and stuck in a black zip tie for reference instead.

Wire run continued towards the grommet in the back quarter panel. The orange/yellow thing is a handheld light from home Depot.

Finally we reach the backside of the quarter panel grommet. Stuck a wrench thru for reference.

I'm going to follow this path with my camera wires and zip tie along the way. I'll post pix when I finish.

Btw, anyone know what this is? Comes out of the quarter panel grommet. Looks like it is supposed to be connected to something. Maybe carries the fluid for the rear wiper?

I just found that loose the other day and am also curious. You could always squirt your rear washer and see if it’s wet? Or I could! 😁

Passenger rear quarter?

I have found mud the most useful for me just like that. I type it out thinking about it and it usually comes to me before anyone reply’s!!🤔

I can confirm it is not for the rear washer. Nothing came out of that tube but wiper fluid did come out where expected in the nozzles above the rear window.

I ran mine outside the boot, under the floor plate at the base of the lift gate - and into the side panel with the jack and tools, then ran it all the way under the floor trim to the radio.

I used a Prius camera and cut a square hole into the downward facing black plastic right over the plate. It really looks like it's supposed to be there... can't complain...

However, I am going to have to relocate it as I am building a swing out - the tire would get in the way...

That tube is used for the rear washers on barn door models, which have two jets, one on each door. In that case, the tube for the wipers runs down the left hand side of the body, splits off at the rear quarter panel, one running into the rear left door, the other running under the floor over to the right side and running into the other door. That particular harness they didn't bother making different versions of for the different models, so it has the tube even when it's not used for the lift up backs.

Super helpful series of pics. Fished all my wiring through the same path today. Thank you.

Having done this last Summer, here is a helpful tip: I removed grommet from the body at both end, used a length of an old flexi cuff (doesn't have to be this just something that is rigid) and lube to snake the camera wiring through the grommet. This method help me get the camera cables through the tight inside diameter of the grommet.

I also secured the camera wiring to the existing wiring inside the lower hatch and placed one zip tie mount to secure so I didn't get any noise and ensure the routing stayed where I wanted it.

Seeing your pictures, maybe going to the passenger side seems like an easier routing, I went to the driver's side to tap into the rear circuit but I guess it is all personal preference.
