I have been slowly putting this rear bumper together. I had to paint it so far to stop the rust. I am not sure what I am going to do yet with the rear side panels. I cut the rear cross member and welded the steel 2x4 directly to the frame rails. The first picture was my original sketch. Let me know what you think. Any ideas for side protection? I do not have a tube bender but I would like to do some loops on the sides with steel tubing.

Move the license plate so Johny Law does not feel compelled to interrupt your travels...

much better than I could do!

why is it so wide? are you going to put other attachments? If not, could you narrow the rotating bar?

and why is the tire holder sticking out that much?

One way to get that rear carrier w/o spending $1800.

Finish those sides with some rocker hoops and you'll be stylin'

Dude, you shouldve also blacked out the license plate on your drawing...

Yea I plan to do either a ladder to a future roof rack or some jerry can holders with the extra space. its angled out to clear the top part of the rear hatch I could have angled it back to stay closer but I think that would have looked stupid.

ah, so you can open the top part without swinging the tire out, eh? Nice feature! I wish mine would do that.

Not to burst anyone's bubble here, as I think it looks nice and probably functions nice as well, but I don't think with a tire on there, especially one of any size, you will be able to open the hatch without the swingout being opened. At least from the pics that's what it looks like.

Nice work though, and it is well worth it. I'm just putting the endcaps on my swing out tire carrier as well, and it's a very good, inexpensive mod.

No, I wish. If I just went straight up off the swingout, it would hit the top hatch at about the license plate light, so I angled it out. It really doesnt stick out as far as it looks in the picture. Just enough to get my hilift and a cb antenna back there.

I like it :)

Simple, yet effective

Just curious, but why extend the arm all the way to the other side

I would think a shorter arm would be less prone to damage caused by too much leverage :hhmm:

Not to mention the pita of trying to get into the trunk when parked in a tight space

Doesn't that go for all rear tire carriers

Nice work! I have the same design in mine so I don't have to spend $1800 for a rear bumper and tire carrier.

too bad, yes indeed you can tell from the pic it can't open with the swingout shut (I should have looked back at the pic, sorry). On my Kaymar it's very close. An inch or 2 lower on the top of the swingout and the upper tailgate could open with the swingout shut. A pity. (Not with the tire on, of course.)

My observation was based upon e9999's original comment. :meh:

And in 99.9% of the cases, yes, you have to open the swingarm to access the rear hatch. Although there are rear mounted spare tires on tailgates that still allow for rear hatch glass to be opened with a tire in place.
