Lookin sharp.. how hard would it be to mount it parrellal to the Hatch? mine is kinda set up that way and i like the way it tuned out I like alot of things you did on yours. looks really tight and sucked up in there. any more corner protecion? got the latching done? very nice.....

Thanks. I could mount it in line with the hatch, but may just leave it as is... unsure yet. There could be more protection built in, I sort of just let these things form. I have some latching mechanisms in the works, using toyota parts of course! Pics soon.

I'm diggin the bungees :D

Seriously - looks good so far. Interesting watching several folks take different directions.

sneak peak, note latch lower left...

I've had that Nissan carrier sitting around for years. The tire mount almost became part of my carrier, but I used a different part. :D

That is very original- I like it. Is it lockable?

If I change the internal mechanism to the locking type, it will lock. When I started the latch project I planned to use a "hidden" behind the carrier(previous pic) latch which had no provision for a lock.... changed my mind, and the locking type mounts differently from the non locking. Not sure if I want to gut it out to change the mounts... been at this bumper for weeks, it would be nice to complete it this year.

I say that, then think about tying the carrier lock into the central lock system and placing a tire carrier ajar sensor w/ warning light. :D

Very purist of you. :D

I like the idea of a warning light rather than someone pointing at the back and yelling at you. ;)

>> FZJ80 door handle latch... <<

That raises the bar for everyone building a rear tyre carrier. :D

You guys should make those rear corner panel protections higher....I swear you'll be happy you did.

I made mine even with the body line and so far have been lucky. I slid the rear hard into a tree and thought I would have major damage, but the bumper took it all. The body was untouched.

I have slid into the tail light lens. My bumper is very close to the body. When the truck was nose up and sliding around in the bottom of a mud hole, I slid right into a tree and heard a crack

What kind of paint are you using, I like the look?

VERY SHARP! I LOVE IT! The concept of using an actual handle had never occured to me and I don't recall ever seing it on anyone else's rig. Very original and well done! bj what size tires are you running? Later :princess:

Thanks folks. The coating is a 2 part urethane epoxy from a company named Car System in Canada. "Bedrock" can be brushed/rolled/sprayed... my bumper was painted with the supplied roller. I am far from the first to do the handle... but it does look sweet!

The tires are 36/12.5R16 Swampers.

bj,

Question regarding your receiver. Did you add any support(s) forward of the bumper? What do you tow and/or what do you figure it's rated at?

I have a similar plan in the works and need the receiver but I want it mounted higher, even with the frame.

Thanks,
Kris
