Had a set of rear oem brakes and rotors installed by a Toyota dealer a couple weeks ago. There is a squeak when the brakes are applied more so when the truck first starts out. Not so much after warmed up. The dealer tells me the new type of pads installed will need shims to stop the noise. Does this sound right?

Did they "Bed The Brakes"?

This is important to stop the new pads from squeaking / squealing. If they didn't, you can.

45 MPH to 5 MPH HARD, without stopping, 3 times, as fast as you can do it. Yes, the brakes will smoke.
Then 45 MPH to 5 MPH, slowly, riding the brakes, without stopping, 3 times.

Drive for 15 minutes until "cool" Squeak/squeal should be gone.

Ya but I really want to know if shims will fix the issue?

Back shims, No,. Once pads are installed, the shims only make them "tight" to the rotor. Once they are being used, the shims only come into play as the pads are nearing the end of their life.

Yes on the following:
End shims, referred to as spacers SHOULD have been done when the pads were installed IF the installer did it properly.

Each set of new pad hardware comes with a bent squiggly tab that is SUPPOSED to be installed on the end of the steel part of the pad between the pad and the caliper. They typically come in 0.010, 0.015, 0.020, and 0.025 thicknesses. They will install on the TRAILING end of the pad (I think) to keep them from rattling forward and backwards in the caliper.

Doing this may or may not remove squealing. These are anti rattle clips.

BILT4ME, is correct, this is a very important step that so many shops skip, nor do they bother to instruct the customer on how they can can preform the bedding process themselves.

I think this is my 3rd or fourth set of pads on the rear axle of this vehicle. I've never had to hard stop it to stop a squeak. Never had a squeek. Is there a new type of pad or new material on the new oem pads?

yes that's mostly correct, it may help or it may not. the shims get designed for the type of pads that's being used. they act as a dampener to stop vibrations which inturn cause noise.

Is there a new type of pad or new material on the new oem pads?

depends on the p/n if theres an az in the number than yes the pads material is different than the oe pads

Ok I'll have to inquire about part numbers.
And if it's any consolation Bilt4me I took the truck out this morning and put a beat down on those brakes with the middle dash button pushed in too. Of course I slid all over the place with a fresh coat of slippery white stuff.😳

The part numbers from the dealer installed rear brakes 04466-60020 pads and 42431-60171 rotors.
Are they the new version?
