I'm at 75K miles and am thinking of doing my rear-bearings before the wintertime --

-- I'm sure almost everyone here has done these -- pretty easy job??

My local mechanic wants $60 a side -- not too much, considering I could mess it up -- but then again, I wouldn't learn anything from paying them...

$60 is pretty reasonable IMO. You may find you need the SST to torque the locknut, which is different from the front end. It's a 3 pronged affair. OTC sells the tool, which is cheaper than $60. Adjust the e-brake at the same time.
 
I've done this, and frankly $120 is not bad (I'm assuming genuine Toyota parts are included here). Just be sure he/she (hey, ya never know, eh) gets all the gaskets and doesn't end up buttoning it up with sealants or some other method. I borrowed a 3 pronged SST from one of the fine gents on the 80s Cool list for mine.
