Hey all,
Fate has it where it is time to look at rear axle swap/upgrade (mine is bent, long story). Ideally, I would love to go with a OEM Toyo rear axle with a rear locker. Looks like the '07 FJ has this option, which is nice since I'm building an '07 470. Anyone have any advice/first-hand-experience on the most economical/easiest rear axle swap with an e-locker? Thanks ahead of time!

You are on the right track. That would be the easiest. It is a direct bolt in I believe. You would just have to figure out the wiring, but it isnt that tough.

Swapping an e-locked 8.2 over would be nice, gets you a stronger rear end w/locker. There are a few people in the GXOR group who have done that swap.

I did the 8.2" on my 04. I would do that if at all possible. Just get the entire 8.2". Either use the entire 8.2 axle or the 8.2 axle and the 8.0 Hubs and Brakes. Works either way.

So no need to buy entire housing? Finding one with KDSS are aquite more expensive and harder.

I saw one in a junkyard a couple hours away, and they wanted $2,000 for the thing. Is that the current going price for a used rear axle with e-locker? Seems steep, could get an ARB installed for the same price, correct?

It is my understanding, from reading here, that the 8.2 is redesigned and strengthened in manner to limit flex of the housing and the flex of the 8.0 causes the gears to pop.

Adding a locker to a 8.0 would not address that problem so you could add the locker, feel more confident, wheel more aggressively and pop your gears anyway

The axle tubes flex, or the actual differential housing itself flexes? If it were just the tubes then some gussets could be added to kill the flex while you had it apart for the locker install. If its the differential housing then we're just boned I suppose! That said, I'm not attached to the stock setup in the least. I've just been trying to plan everything out and a rear locker was on my hit list, but I haven't dug that far into it yet so I was happy to see this thread pop up! I like to buy once, cry once, so I look forward to seeing some input on the subject.

Yes . I got it cheaper . But that price is common.

So price out the locker . Then the beefier diff. Really the diff is costing 800 at that point. Sell the old one for 300-500 . Now your at 300 over your ARB idea .

I'm tracking, now I guess I have to keep an eye out for an FJ axle.

Looks like I'll be heading to an '07 FJ axle (low miles) with the elocker. Can't find a 2010+...I'll report back if any issues arise.
