Is there something wrong with the axle that's under there right now? Either one of those two axles aren't really going to gain you much in the strength department over that stock axle.

The V6 rear will have essentially the same diameter axle shafts and will have a centered rear end, but a smaller (~8.25) ring gear. Not sure if you would gain any width over that stock one (if any).

The J62 rear axle will have a RH diff offset with an equal size ring gear (~9.5). The shafts will be eqaul in diameter. You wil gain about 2-3 inches total width over that stock axle.

Of course, that is if that is a BJ, HJ (did they even make H or FJ series. It looks like a 74, and I think I can see leaf springs, so I'd wager it's a BJ74, so that info applies. But, if it's an LJ or PJ (light duty LC with coils), then it will have an axle pretty much equal to that of the V6 rear and a J62 would be more (but not really that much) of an upgrade.

Maybe I'm missing something?

I'am sorry, i should have stated.I do not have the original axles for the truck. I throw a set of mini axles under it so it would be mobile. the rear bolted right in. That got me thinking. if i use the mini rear it opens up alot of t-case options.
You see my original plan was to use the axles and engine(3fe) out of my parts fj62. then throw a sm420 and 3spd t-case behind that. But now having that mini rear fitting in there so slick I was curious if i would loose anything in strenght by going that route

btw, i didn't get any of the drive train with the truck. This is the donor truck from stickboys 13bt swap into his 60 series

so yes it's a bj74

Sweet new project there, I have always wanted to build one of them. Like thefreg stated the only strength advantage will be the ring gear. Axles and diffs will be easier to locate when you break the v6 axle than the 60. Other bonus with the V6 axle is no c-clips.

The t-case availability with the v6 being centered is better, and atlas or dana300 would be awesome with front dig ability, stregth, and lower gearing available.

I am suprised you not going with d60s.

it's too bad you gotta get rid of the body panels. I dig the cheezy graphics. Go with the mini rear. Do the D300. Sweet.

i'am thinking mini rear and dual mini cases. though front only would be sweet!!

Its funny you say that about the decals........ I'am talking to a friend that does them to see if i can make some duplicates of the ones on it. their cheesy but i like them too

Old school 80's decals are the bomb! I don't know why, I'm just a sucker for em.
