Stupidly marred the threads while doing the front brakes on a 2016+. Is the easiest fix just a retap and larger bolt or am I SOL and need a new caliper?

Short term, re-tap and larger bolt is probably fine but personally I’d replace the caliper.. they’re relatively cheap (relative to shearing a caliper and tearing up a wheel, or worse haha). Good luck man

Larger bolt would require drilling the knuckle as well, and that’s a compromise I wouldn’t be willing to make.

New calipers aren’t as expensive as you might assume from the discount sites.. about $150 generally. Though I understand waiting on shipping will be inconvenient. MSRP is around $200 if you want to try the local parts counter.

I definitely would not run an aftermarket one from a parts store however.

Well I am biting the bullet and ordering a new caliper. $152 from my local dealer. Such a painfully stupid mistake by me that I almost can't believe it.

Last question from me for the day - does anyone know if the new calipers will come with the fastener or will I need to track down the part number for that bolt? Hoping this would be easy for the dealer to provide if needed.

Mounting hardware wasn’t included when I ordered my 16+ calipers. They did have new pins and springs though.

Also get the crush washer for the banjo bolt. It’s technically one part, both washers with a little web attaching them.

You're in good company here.

Spend some time reading the SQOD thread until you feel better.

The money spent on stupid mistakes could well buy several new LX600s.

Oh, and the brake caliper bolt part number for 16+ is 90105-14198

Crush washer 47389-50020

So, related story here. When I did the front brake pads and rotors a couple years ago I noticed at some point previously, some idiot put totally the wrong bolt in for one of the caliper bolts. Nowhere near the right thread size, nowhere near the right grade of bolt, different head size, totally destroyed the caliper threads when it came out. At the time the truck was only a couple years old, had to have been the first brake job ever done so it could have even been a dealer. Unbelievable that on a $80K vehicle someone would just throw a random bolt in such a critical location. I replaced both calipers from the dealer, I think they were about $200 each (pre 2016 versions).

I do have to say I have been wrenching on cars for almost 30 yrs and this is my first catastrophic crossthreaded bolt and it seemed deceptively easily done so I can see how it could happen easily at a dealer. Definitely no excuse though. I don't know if it it is the caliper material or the heat of the brakes that might have made it more susceptible or just carelessness on my part.

Good news is I had materials on hand for a differentials fluid change and transfer case fluid change and also greased all the zerks so at least I was able to make use of the vehicle being out of commission. I have BB skids so dropping them and reinstalling is bit of a pain.
