IS a shame the noise of the grinder, but beside that belt sanders are incredibly useful..

The even sell "Scothbright" Belt to polish, to even out surfaces SAtin finish after anodizing..

I'm making two of them a 4.5" versions with a Makita cordless and a 7" version with a Makita variable speed "Polisher"

Here are some photos of the 4.5"

I don't like Cannondale but I love the parts..

A homage to the Disco era..

For some reason I can never drill a hole straight.

Actually is very concentric, I use the core of a flapper wheel and try to drill the holes on the same interval (the base is a hexagon, so I just move it 120 degrees each time.

Dude keep us updated on your DIY for the 4.5". I would love to be able to do this, could have some seriously awesome usage.

Oh is not mine to any extend, I just got inspire by the video and the desire to have a tiny grinder since for ever..

The IBIS in the background (Ex "Chuck Ibis bike from 1988) is kind of a clue since skinny sander are perfect for bicycle hacks like me (sadly I can build a straight frame, you just don't want to see it with out paint..)

Actually I think the Boom is going to be the Bomb, I have a few surplices under the blanket.

Sadly early testing of the Cannondale Lefty clamp is showing a tendency for failure, basically it "Pops out" from the grinders head (Very, Very dangerous I need to make sure the bolts on the wheel can not protrude) so now I need to find/buy two big clunks of aluminum and carve them down to fit the profile of the head and the bores for the handles and "Clamp, the clamp down"

No big deal is just loud and time consuming job to do it by hand, but I'm able.

Unless somebody has a a better idea..

I'm all for DIY stuff but you can buy a ready made version of those sanders for $50 give or take...

air powered version: Eastwood Mini Belt Sander

Harbor Freight electric version: 5.3 Amp 1/2 in. Heavy Duty Bandfile Belt Sander

Google bandfile or narrow belt sander for even more options.

I have the HF version at home and a high dollar Dynabrade air version at work. Sure the Dynabrade tool is better. But the $35 HF tool worked just fine deburring some steel machined parts I made at home with my mill. I have not tried using good belts on the HF tool but I'd bet that using good abrasives would make it work just fine vs. the HF belts (that worked better than expected).

Nick, that HF affair looks in the pics like just a head attached to a grinder. If so, do you think the head would fit other grinders?

e9999, I don't have the tool here in MA - it's currently in IN so I cannot give you a good answer. I'm also pretty sure my version is a different, earlier design so apples and oranges anyway.

In the end "it depends" would be my answer regardless. It depends on your skills, tools and determination to make it work...with enough weld wire and machining you can do anything you want. Whether you should is another issue entirely.

My version so far looks like poop..

Well i like to "approximate" to my solutions..

So far I bead the two 5/16' plates on the hydro press and start to locate all the places the where touching the grinder..

My method is to mbuild a very rigid structure, because they don't ''Lie" (if is not right they let you know)

From here I will install five more bolts in the front part of the plates and install a much longer plate of aluminum that will serve as a boom...

More progress hopefully soon

That looks like a good way to lose a body part, or an eye.

I'm with Nick, just go buy one. Spend your time on your Cruiser.

(or cleaning off that workbench)

What is the fun on buying one if I can make one that work half as well and cost the twist as much..

Workshop;endless Perdue, I'm ultra messy by nature even if I have a plan for everything, but nothing is on his place..

doesn't look like poop, just like it's out of a Mad Max movie

(that's a good thing...)
