According to Haynes, I'm supposed to take this pin out. Is that correct or do I need to put it back?

If I am supposed to get it out, how? I tried tapping it to where it is in the pic but it came to a stop and I don't want to mess anything up.

What I'm doing is a rebuild kit. Seals, bearings,... right now I'm trying to get the locking pins(c pins) off so I can pull the axles.

Mud wisdom needed !!

Also, any tips would be appreciated.

The cross-shaft is stuck because the spiders have scarred it up from excessive wheelspin.

Grab it w/ a vise-grip and twist & pull. It's gotta come out...

X2, you can also stick a drift in the end hole and pull while twisting. Normally they just slide out.

can it come out either end? also, any tips to getting the c pins off?

ok, got the wheel bearing all the way out to the edge/end of the axle housing but that's as far as I can go with my junior tool kit(less a claw hammer I've had for years).

I saw it mentioned in another thread a tool called a bearing puller???

What do you guys use?

Also, hopefully the new bearing won't be as hard going back in....

What Jim said,
on the way back in be carefull to put it in straight and do not use your junior hammer direct to the bearing race, use a wood block, the old race or best yet, a brass drift to seat the new one.

an old timer at the parts store said he just uses the end of the axle to pop it out with.

not sure what kind of shape the splines/grooves would be in but I may at least pay it some thought.

I'll report back with the results.

EDIT: that will mess up your splines if its stubborn like mine is.

no, I didn't find out the hard way. lol.

If you have a harbor frieght near by a puller is about $20, Likely you will break it like I did mine, Then weld it back together.
Auto zone or checker will have one you can borrow.

How to get the bearing sleeve off of the axle? The left side didn't have any surface wear so I left it alone but the right side has the slightest groove so I'd like to replace with new one.

This is the inner-most part of the bearing that is on the axle itself.

Here's a pic of the grooves. I took it to a shop down the road which the guy said that he could get it off(didn't give me a price) but that I'd have to take it to a machine shop or to somebody with a press to press the new one on.
My question is, is it worth all of that effort/$$? or should I use the old one--the grooves look worse than they feel rubbing my finger across....

I take mine to a machine shop.
It don't take them hardly anytime to change them.
It is worth it, things only get worse ,they never get better. My opinion.

I took it to a muffler shop that said they could do it for $45.

The grooves are from the seal and as stated before they look worse than they are with the sun reflecting off 'em. This side wasn't leaking so I left it on. The race part is good. I'm going to check it for leakage after driving it a bit. If I need to I'll do the replacement.

Putting that thing back together with be frustrating. Not sure if the spider gear fell out but mine did. You will have to be patient and keep moving it around till they line up.

That was fun. I wound up with both of them up against each other and the opening to the carrier twd the front. It took me some patience to get that mess undone.
I finally got both tires back down on the ground. All I've got left to do is some scraping before I put the gasket and cover back on.
I thought I'd ease it down the street and back with just the cover to make sure everything's ok before I spend the gasket and new oil.

When I do them , I put the shaft back after I remove the spacer without disturbing the spider gears. Then I can install the axle shafts and c-clips without removing the antthing, then I install the spacer.
So work on installing the spiders first and secure them with spacer shaft then install axle shafts .
