According to the manual.

1 coat the joint inner parts and outer shaft inside with moly

i2 nsert the inner racee in the cage through the large opening

3 Position the PROTRUDING end of the inner race towards the wide side of the cage

4 Make sure to position the wide side of the cage and the inner race protruding end outward

IS the wider tapered groove side, the prodtruding side?

I just took the long side apart, the wide side of the cage was to the outside, the wide side of the grooves in the inner race were facing in. Am I confused?
Thanks
steven

A note to whoever works on the definitive 80 Series birfield repack tutorial:

Please include this issue in the write-up with good photos showing proper joint reassembly and a note that the FSM has incorrect drawings.

When I did mine I got TOTALLY confused as to which side of the cage faces into the birfield. I called CDan and he had to pull a new one off the shelf and look at it.

If you look at the cage, one side is thinner and has a flat spot leading from the outer edge in toward the ball area. you can see that clearly in the above link on one of the last photos.

What I would suggest is to wipe everything down to get rid of the grease if you have some in there and then coat everything with a light oil such as Marvels and do a dry assembly. If it is wrong you will not get full motion from the joint. WHich is to say you can stick in the inner axle without the clip and easily rotate the axle throughout the range of the joint easilly and smoothly.

I am holding a clean assembly as we speak.

Both the thinner lip of the cage as well as the wider side of the grooves Both face outwards?

Look at that last pic in the link, it should be clear as to how to put this together.

Just forget about the orientation of the tire and such, focus on the joint!!!!

When assembled that flat area should be facing out of the bell and seen by you.

As far as the inner race I can't be sure without it in my hands, but it only goes in one way I think.

Your right Rick the pic at the end of the thread shows the orientation.

Thank you I was really starting to confuse myself.

I figured I was ready to go with my print ups and FSM.

Awile ago Eriks-Bruisers sugested getting an extra oil seal in case you bugger up the one you have putting in the exel.

Maybe an exra clip would be good to for those that dont ask about orientation figuring the manual is spot on. My new clip should be here tomarow, only ten bucks. The short side's cage is in wrong.
Thanks
Steven
