Been planning this job for months since I'm a rookie when it comes to wrenching. Read many posts, tech links and various write-ups all of which have been invaluable.

I have everything broken down (pic 1), except I can't get the birf/axle out of the inner knuckle :bang:. I have the flat parts lined up (pics 2,3) but it seems to be hitting the inner knuckle still.

Please tell me I'm missing something easy .

Any ideas??

Thanks!

Rotate 180 and try again. You've got it right but maybe less interference at 180.

Thanks for the input. I went back out and pulled harder (both hands on it with all of my body weight) while jiggling it a little up and down and side to side. Does it still sound like I'm talking about the axle :o.

Anyway, it still won't budge. I've actually caused some surface scratches on the flat portion of the birf trying to extract it (see pic). It has to come out right? Someone must have gotten it in there.

On a related note...the lower knuckle studs didn't have cone washers and one stud unscrewed from the knuckle while I was trying to remove the nut. Is that weird?

Thanks again. I'll keep trying.

I have seen bent axle housings that prevent the axle shaft assembly from being able to be pulled out of the housing because of the binding load placed on the inner axle shaft.

Get those flat spots lined up top and bottom and try and get a pry bar of some sort in on the back side of the outer axle stub, and lever it out of the housing.

:meh:

Keep trying. It will come out, I went through the same thing earlier this year. Thought I was missing something when all of a sudden it just came right out.

Same thing will happen when you go to reinstall it. Just have to find the right spot.

Just did this myself. Flat spot up, grab the shaft and got to pull up and then out, worked on both of mine for me anyway. Good luck.
