i just started driving my fj40 i finally finished building it. its a 1976, i have rebuilt the carb. so today was the first time i tried going over 60km. i can mkae it to 70 but then the engine starts to cough and sputter. while shooting out black smoke out the exhaust. im running the stock mech pump for fuel, it has been rebuilt. i really dont like playing with carbs so if some one could tell me something to try it would be great and i have aboiut an 2 hours to fix the problem.

the choke works. its not choked when im running it

Black smoke would make me wonder if you've got unburned fuel from inadequate spark. Can you try running up higher RPMs in lower gears to see if this is an RPM vs speed sensitive issue?

There is also a chance that the primary & secondary main jets are reversed.

Pri should be around 145, sec around 200.

The much larger sec jet will pour fuel into the primary barrel, making it almost undriveable above 25% throttle.
