I'm planning on lifting my 62. Prolly go with 3-4" OME lift with 33s or 35s. Should I regear with the bigger tires or will I be alright?

FWIW, my 62 doesn't like 33" bias TSLs in high range. My vote would be for a regear.

IMHO 33 are iffy, 35 would be better if you regear.

Agree with the two that already chimed in. I'm running wider 33s (12.5) on my stock gearing and let's just say i'm not breaking any speed records. Oh, and i live in a relatively FLAT part of the US. I cant imagine running my 62 in the mountains with my current setup.

I guess you could technically go ahead and try out the lift and tires and see how it feels. If you dont like it, go ahead and regear.

ok school me on gearing. i've poked around and come up with all sorts of options, 4.56, 4.11, 4.10, 4.88  seems like there's alot of options. I'd be running 80% of the time on the road. (DD) more than likely lock the rear. (ausie or cable lock, yet another question for a future post:D)

Tire diameter divided by gear ratio should stay as close to stock as possible for performance and economy.

So stock is what 28", with a gear ratio of 4.11 (or 4.10, can never remember) yields 6.83 inches per revolution of the driveshaft.

33" tires (assuming that's the true dia) and the 6.83 suggests a gear ratio around 4.83 (4.88)

35" tires ~ 5.12

If you don't mind spending more time in 3rd than you do in the stock setup, then you can likely go for gears with a lower ratio.

I just did the same thing. OME, 33 10.5 BFG on a 62 with auto trans. I was having enough problems before on California high mountain passes and highways with 31s so I chose to regear. Definitely the right choice. I can now stay in overdrive on the uphills (as long as I hit them with speed). I went with 4.56 which was actually closer to stock than the 4.88. I think stock was closer to 29 and 33 bfgs are closer to 32. I thought I was still going to be slightly tall but when on the highway the road side radar actually says I'm only going 60 with the speedo at 65.

In short, I'd say yes - 4.56 for 33s, 4.88 for 35s.

After doing some math ti doesn't make sense that I would be under geared.

28.3 inch tires * Pi / 4.1 = 21.68" per axle rotation
32.7 inch tires * Pi/ 4.56 = 22.53" per rotation

Hmmm. either my 7th grade math is wrong, the radar is lying, or Mudrak put 4.88s in when I asked for 4.56s. I need to get a radar on this thing.

As mentioned already, it's typical to go with 4.56 for 33" tires and 4.88 with 35" tires when running the A440F auto.

Thanks fellers, that helps alot. now then, where's the best place to buy the new gears from?

Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters is on this board.

Another good place is Randy's Ring & Pinion

There are a lot of choices. I would have someone setup the 3rd members if you have not done it before or read up a lot before trying to do it yourself for first time. A homebrew sounds good now.

I'll be sure to study up on it:D. Maybe I can find a local cruiserhead who's done it to come over and make sure I don't screw it up. A homebrew is always good. I had an oatmeal stout for breakfast:D:beer::cheers:
