A friend of mine is selling a 1982 BJ60. This is basically a diesel FJ60. It is all stock and does run but not very well. The 3B engine is shot but it is complete. The body has a couple of rough spots but there is no rust. The vehicle was bought in Canada and has roughly 473,676 km on it which converts to roughly 295,000 miles.

This 60 is completely stock with 3B diesel engine, 4 spd transmission. This would be a good project or parts vehicle for anyone looking to go diesel. Asking price is $1600. Thought I would offer to local Copper State members first!

Being a complete Diesel neophite, are the costs to revive a dead diesel in the same ball park as a gas engine? I'm guessing probably a bit more. Or is it more of a punt and start over/full replacement deal. I'm intrigued by the possibility of going diesel.

to revive this engine is a big dark area, who knows whats wrong with it and what it needs to be brought back, i'm not trying to make you run from it, on the contrary, but you need to understand it could run into the thousands.

i dont know all the prices on the 3B, but a few prices for my isuzu engine are as follows:
engine is sleeved, so a rebuild kit is a non machine shop affair, kit runs just under 2k
injectors are $200 ea (x4)
pump is about $800 rebuilt.
i had the starter rebuilt locally not long ago,, $240
alternator has a vacuum pump built-in so that will be spendy when it goes out.

diesels are not cheap, but they need to be fixed less often and they do get better mileage, so put that all together and it might come out about the same as a gasser.

if your really interested go for it, its cool, its different and there is ALOT of support out there on these rigs.

I figured you'd latch onto this thread at some point. Thanks for the straight forward overview. I've been trying to read up on the Diesel Forum as well to become more informed.

It's actually partly your fault you know. After reading your Isuzu swap thread I keep thinking about getting a diesel. Very big cool factor and a lot of up side. I need another project like I need another hole in my head but this one might be hard to pass on.

It is actually an '83...I looked up the VIN, but it only has a 4 speed. It was originally registered in ME when it was brought in to the country but has been registered in AZ since 1995.
 
well norm just keep in mind that most guys who do swaps or want to do them do it for the wrong reasons. it seems most guys like the coolness factor (guilty) but they are also under the guise that they will be saving all kinds of money running a diesel when in fact its not so. for a swap to pay for itself in a timely enough manner for it to be the reason for swapping you would have to run just about the whole engines lifespan w/o any mechanical breakdowns.

heres my example,,,, i am into my swap for about 7k, fuel costs more right now than gas. i get double the mileage than i did with the 2F, assuming i have no mechanical issues with my pig how many miles do i need to drive just to break even??

buying this rig would put you lightyears ahead in terms of financial gain because its already a diesel and its relatively cheap. you could spend $1 or $1,000 getting it going again, buts that nothing compared to an 8k swap project.

what would i do?? i'd buy it and put the drivetrain in your pig:)

Thanks for the additional information Rick. It's good to know there is a local shop for diesel repairs. Forgive my ignorance but can you advise what a CDN head is? I'm still getting up to speed on the Diesel lingo. I read on MUD that there is cylinder head source out of OZ that is reasonable but don't know how much the shipping will be $$$.

Forgive me for barging into your club forum.

I think you can still get high nickel aftermarket heads from allhead in aus. They used to be about $600 AUD with precups installed. Last I checked dealer was about $1200 w/o precups. I'd stay away from a used head if I could help it. Nearly every used one I've seen had cracks, Small cracks will be big cracks eventially.

Injector rebuilds run about $40ea exchange. Inline injector pumps will pump concrete and rarely need anything but a timing reset.

All in, with machining, but doing your own assembly, I'd count on spending about $3500 for a good rebuild. You can expect 200,000 -500,000 miles after that.

Commentary and feedback are always welcome here. Thanks for the additional info HTH. I'm trying to look at this project with eyes wide open. Any idea what the addition of the turbo to the 3B runs ball park? From what I've read these engines lack some oommfff on the hills without one. That might be an issue around here.
 
the turbo is a wide open space for price,, i mean you can source one from a junkyard off some random turbo'd car and install it for as little as $300. or you can go the other way.

If you decide to pull the trigger, let me know. I'd like to give it a once-over just for my own curiosity's sake. Plus, I'm a bit of a diesel mechanic and may be able to lend a hand if you have beer.

I'm also soon to go Rhino's route, as I have had a 94 Isuzu 4-cyl diesel fall in my lap. As soon as I have feeling in my legs again, I think I'm gonna go for it.
