I'm trying to find where exactly this water is intruding.
it happens in heavy rain and through the car wash. i've circled where i see the water come through and i'm thinking it might be from the screw hole on the cargo rack? or the used weather stripping?

I had the same thing happen in my 100 series. It turned out to be the rubber gasket for the wire bundle.

Easy way to find out is dry everything really well, then go through a car wash. Open the lift gate and see what is wet.

I used some silicone caulk to fix mine. $5 caulk, $10 car wash.

Y’all think this is a sunroof drain hole issue ? It’s all the way back in the cargo / third row !

And it parallels the rear sunroof drain hose on that side. . .

Ok I’ll check that out. For my sanity - y’all think the wAter getting into the rear speaker / interior roof panel is because the sun roof drain ducts are clogged ??
Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Much appreciated !

I see the sunroof mentioned often for random leaks. If I never open mine would I ever have to worry about checking these drains? I could easily see opening the thing once a year and that’s a maybe.

Your sunroof drain doesn't go anywhere near the top of that pillar (D pillar). The only lines through there are the rear washer line (and the connection where the line splits is below the leak). That will be roof rack rail holes if anything.

The sunroof drain drops down the C pillar, runs along the wheel well, and drops behind the AC compressor/fan.

If it’s roof rack holes - what’s the fix ? Pop
Off the cover, re - tighten the bolts ? Get some loctite?

Pop off the cover and reseal - use a semi hardening sealant - I’ll find you the part number for what I use

Yeah, I had the wrong pillar. They come down c, over the tire hump and out at the bottom of d.

I would check the two tubes that enter the ceiling that are used to get wires and wiper fluid into the rear hatch.

Notice below that the rubber connection is NOT protected by the hatch seal...so if it becomes dislodged...water will POUR directly into the headliner via the runoff that goes into the gap where the hatch lifts at the roof.

I would wager a fair amount that you’ll find the one toward driver side in rear is dislodged.

Open hatch fully and look at its top just above where the hatch seal is:

Water in here will run and exit down that rear driver pillar and elsewhere.

^^ This. Having run wires through those boots, it is obvious that Toyota knows it is a risk area and the boot has a robust and tight seal - kind of a PITA, but it needs to be that way. If that has become dislodged and out of the retention groove, that will likely be your issue.

Ok. Just checked this and it felt loose for sure. Pushed it back down and gonna go through the car wash. Will
Update everyone.
really wasn’t looking forward to taking off the roof rack and resealing the bolts. Do y’all think that something I should do anyway?

That is exactly what happened in my 100 series, and what I was referencing in my earlier reply.

Reseating it did not fix the problem for me, but a bit of clear silicone adhesive / caulk fixed it. No problems since that, and that was 3 or so years ago.

Thanks everyone. I am 95% this is the problem. Have been testing with a hose. What’s the replacement like for the entire boot? The yellow piece is part of the entire thing right ? That’s not replaceable individually / wouldn’t even really work ?

It isn’t a water tight seal and not intended to be. Otherwise it would get very expensive and hard on the actuating motor.

For this reason basically all modern sunroofs have what is effectively a gutter below the gap that catches water and directs it down through tubes at each corner. It isn’t a common issue here but for some cars they can get clogged and water run over the lip of that gutter.. and get water everywhere.

Thank you for this, I am dealing with a leak in mine, noticed a slight pillar and headliner this morning and found the leak was coming through there. Luckily I didn’t leave it long enough for water to make it down to the floor.

Thanks Hilary 👎

I’m experiencing same leak in my 2015 LC200. What was the solution? Replace that rubber wire boot housing or silicone? TIA
