I installed an AIWA (50wx4) CD head unit in my 94 yesterday. The CD player works/sounds great but radio is a different story. When the unit is switched to radio, a dull buzz sound comes from the speakers for a couple seconds and then nothing. Switch the unit back to CD and nothing. I have to turn the unit off and back on to restore the CD sound. At first I thought it may not be getting an adaquate power supply but why when the CD player sound work? I installed an additional ground wire but no cure. Should the blue power antenna wire be wired the red 12 V power terminal since the separate push button antenna?

can't help too much except you f'd up buying an AIWA! I owned a home Aiwa system, had many friends with them also and every single one had the CD player go out! Every one! I won't buy another.

I'm really not looking forward to replacing my unit. It appears that when the PO had the truck the stereo might have gotten ripped out. I can't see any of the mounting tabs behind the system. It just kinda sits in there and you can wiggle it. Still plays, so i'm not fixing it until it stops playing.

Does anyone have a schematic for the oem unit for the 80?

Disconnect the power antenna lead!!!!!!!

That is your problem. I had the same problem and just posted about it. Something about the wiring doesn't seem to like hooking it to the new unit.

Leave the blue wire alone if you are keeping the factory up down buttons. I mean tape it off and don't use it unless you need to turn on an amp with it.

Thanks StressPuppy. Hopefully I can pull the blue wire out from behind the unit through the ash tray opening. I would hate to pull all the sh*t back out to access it.

I know what you mean. When I installed my (last night, actually) I tried everything BEFORE putting it back in. That is when I found the problem and the fix. I think that must be the first time I tried before hand. I usually end up having to pull things apart.

Unfortunately, I will have to pull mine apart again. I have an amp and new speakers to put in and I need to run patch cables to the amp. I was too impatient to wait and do it all at once!!!

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I am still on the hunt to find out how to make it work as an auto with the aftermarket HU.

I don't get it guys...

As I posted in SPupp's recent thread on this topic, if the blue antenna control wire (on the aftermarket Metra harness, not from the radio!) is connected properly, everything works as you would expect. The antenna goes up and down with the power on-off switch on my Eclipse head unit, and the Antenna Up-Down switch works as designed.

I suppose there could be something different about the 91-92 wiring, but the 95-97s are all the same as far as I know. I would recommend double checking the connections.

Cheers, R -

It sounds as though the wiring might be different. My victims were a 91 and a 94. I didn't run the blue wires on either of them.

Also, when installing a headunit it is always a good idea to hook up RCA cables (label them too) and run a longer blue wire down to somewhere where you can get at it without tearing apart the dash. This allows for future planning. I've done this so many times on 80s I could do it in my sleep now. I thought I got smart when I installed my 94 stereo a few weeks ago. I ran a longer blue wire and I ran RCAs for future amps but I forgot to run a Changer Controller cord. This sort of bummed me out because I have a 10 disc MP3 Changer in my 91 that I could just unplug and swap the consoles between the two if I was going on a long trip in the 94.

PC - I think they are different. I hooked the blue wire from the Alpine HU to the blue Metra harness wire, which goes to the red/black wire in the harness. What is odd is that that same connection in the Metra harnes has a loop-back to the pin next to it (not sure of the toyota wire color). This obviously has something to do with this whole thing, but I still can't get my antenna to work at all.

When I get the stuff for installing the amp in the back (where the "subwoofer" used to be), I'll have to pull the HU to run the patch cords. I'll tinker abit more then and see what I come up with.

In the meantime, if anyone has any ideas, there are at least two of us trying to figure this one out......

IMHO, I believe you're wiring is incorrect.

The Red/Blk wire in that plug is the woofer amp signal wire on pin 9. Your antenna motor control wire should be connected to the violet (purple) wire on pin 8. Double check to see what you have connected to pin 8...
