my brain is fried from reading EEC/EGR/ECU threads.

i picked up these 9005/9006 (not exactly sure which ones are high beams) XENON bulbs. they seem to work much better than old halogens.

however the ones i am pulling out are PHILLIPS 9011’s (“center bulb”) and PHILLIPS 9012’s (“outside bulb”).

i gather the 9006 should go in the 9012 slot but should i bother replacing them? or go back and get my money from o’rielly’s?

i mean are the 9011/9012’s better than these 9005/9006 aside from the fact the new ones are newer?

i thought i’d find old shagged out halogens in there so i’m not sure whether to keep what i have and save the money.

THANKS

From this thread I gather the 9011 are the upgrade. Haven't changed mine yet but plan to at some point.

Headlight bulb question

thanks. for some reason i previously have gone with the 9005/9006 but upgraded to xenon.

/appreciate/ it.

HID is high intensity discharge i guess? meaning it is slightly better than the conventional halogen (or something...)?

9006 stock low beam (halogen)
9005 stock high beam (halogen)
9012 HIR low beam (upgrade from OEM)
9011 HIR high beam (upgrade from OEM)

The 9012/9011 will require slight modification of the tabs to fit properly in the housing.
Personally, I have 9011s in all 4 positions. Low beams are great and high beams are like daylight.

Don't fall for that blue colored bulb garbage.

HID is a completely different animal altogether. "A completely different animal"
It requires a different housing and a ballast.

If you're happy with 9011 bulbs, why not stay with them? I have them in all 4 and they are doing great. And apparently they are like $8/each on Rock Auto so you should save money over Sylvania's.

my bad. the packaging for the xenon bulbs says “HID attitude”. i thought from reading on the forum it was a whole other thing but i guess i got tricked up by the marketing.
thanks...

thanks. last time i did my motorcycle i think i ended up with tungsten halogen which i was quite happy with. i think i may have grabbed the wrong stuff running around yesterday...

Hi, The Silver Stars are nice lights,we've been running them for awhile. Mike

I actually just put 4 in from RA last week, maybe $42 shipped. I am happy with them.

Hi Jon, so you used the 9011 for both low and high beams? What is the advantage to that?

er, duh. last time i changed a headlight it was on a 2006 4 runner and the damn thing slipped when i put it back in and went sliding all the damn way down and to the side into the bottom of the closed headlight housing. took me half an hour to mcgyver it out with carpet tape and a coat hangar.

so - you are saying there are two /pairs/ of bulbs in there and i guess i just pulled the 9011's which must have been the high beams.

and i should check and verify that the low beams are 9012?

i mean i went to replace them with the ones i bought but since there seemed to be an upgrade in there already i left it as is...s

9011s tabs don't fit without trimming but are upgrades. I did my low beams with 9011s and it is a HUGE difference from stock. Don't throw away good, brighter bulbs for sylvania marketing trash.

ok. but is there a pair in there for the low beams and a pair for the high beams?

i think the previous owner for in there and did the mod.

and from your post i think i just checked the ones in the high beam slot? the 9011’s i guess?

Yes, 4 bulbs total.
I know you can use 9011's in all 4 but not sure about 9012.
Use the search function, it will be your best friend. Not trying to be mean, but there is more info on here than you can imagine and it's probably already in a thread.

Have done a bunch of 9011s in all holes, there are two considerations. The base of the high beam bulb is smaller, so we remove the o-ring from the old bulb and put it on the new one. The larger o-ring better centers the smaller bulb and improves sealing. The high beams have significantly shorter rated life, but at the price, I will take the increased output and replace them more often.

^^^^^ Important point. In fact I leave the old O-ring on and ADD the new one to form a nice tight fit in the socket.

How often are you replacing the low beam bulbs? I installed 9012's in my low beams and while an improvement over stock, they look like candles to everything else out there.

IIRC, the rated life hours on the high beam bulb is about half of the low. Have only replaced one, not a big deal, just one of the considerations.
