Are you saying that the wire closest to the bottom of your picture (copied below) is plugged in to your starter? Because as best I can tell, that's the wire that I have plugged into my starter. Looks like someone cut-off yours' and replaced it with a round connector.

NO the bottom wire in my picture (which was originally all white) is not plugged into anything at the time. The middle (smaller gauge and black with a white stripe) is slip-on type and is attached.
Where does it lead to?
Was it attached to the battery connection on the orginal starter?
If so it must be your power supply to the fuse box......

Here is my early 71 truck with GR starter wired, (surprise) exactly the way the original starter was wired. No great mystery. All of the (pre-72) early wiring diagrams show them wired exactly this way.
Very heavy gauge wire from Battery (Mine is Black with Yellow Stripe--original was Solid Black, yours is Red) to Main Post on Starter.
Solid White wire comes from firewall and also attaches to the main starter post using ring terminal. It could just as easily go to the (+) battery terminal, but this is just a convenient place to anchor it. Later trucks went to the battery. Mine has a wire fusible link on it. It is a great idea and you should put one on yours, too. The White wire goes to your ammeter from where it supplies all of the power to your rig except the starter.
Black with White Stripe wire comes from your ignition switch ST terminal and attaches via blade terminal to your starter solenoid.
A smaller gauge Black with Yellow Stripe wire comes off the wire harness along with these wires. It connects your ignition switch IG terminal to your coil (+) terminal. It has nothing to do with your starter.
Yes, I have a supplemental ground wire going from the block/starter bolt to the frame.

Thanks IDave, I'll give that makes sense. I'm off to give it a try. That wire was originally connected to the starter but since the new starter has the solenoid on the bottom it is too short now.

If you add a length of fusible link wire and a new ring terminal, it should be just the right length!

In defense of the "two-wire" club, our newer cars power the electrical system through a fusible link to the (+) terminal rather than running a wire off the starter terminal.
