I have started adding a winch plate to an C-channel bumper by the below design. My question is would it be necessary to place the side wings in front of the back plate to transfer load stress to the bumper as a truss (pic2) or is it fine on the sides (as I some how measured and cut it to be ) as long as the welds are good(pic1)?

So now that I type it out I kind of feel I know the answer, I just didnt want to admit it and start grinding again. :)

Ya, I have to agree, it shouldn't really matter as long as you have good penetration. Need more bevel on the joints, then crank up the heat.

Thanks for the quick answers guys

Those pics kinda suck but its got a 1/8'' bevel to each piece; ill give it a few more passes before I have at it. I grabbed some .35 wire as well instead of the .30 i had spooled. Now if it would just quit raining each day i have available to work on this.

What kind of a welder are you using?

um yeah this one ...... welder :o
Flux core good for 1/4'' , not running gas yet.

not the best but has been a good little unit. My concern was the thickness of the channel I'm attaching to which is 7/16''.

I don't have an opinion on the welder.
As far as the weldment, you only need enough heat to melt the thinner of the two plates you are joining (within reason) Weave the gun, pausing longer on the thicker plate than the thinner plate. Practice on some scrap, and if you don't get warm and fuzzy feelings from the test weld, fall back and punt the job to a pro.
