Okay as you all know I am still relatively new to the 60 series world....I took it out for a drive on a side road the other day and it handles good and has plenty of power. The only problem is it is really loud. Is this normal.

What speeds do you usually in everyday driving shift into 2nd 3rd 4th gears?

Thanks

my car whines pretty good, but so does practically every other 60 i've heard.

i shift about 3200 when i'm trying to get somewhere sooner then later, any more and i'm kicking a dead horse. if i'm just moping around town, i'll baby it and shift no higher then 2500 (my citys flat).

Hey Weaver,

Ellensburg may be flat, but it's sure as hell windy! Like gale-force winds every single day (I'm originally from Yakima).

Sorry to hijack!

I'm shifting around 2000rpm or less or max 2500rpm when I'm taking on a hill. I baby my cruiser big time. If you're getting A LOT of noise (like a vacuum cleaner reading 11 on the volume knob - Spinal Tap style) you might check out your fan clutch as it may be dramatically contributing to the overall level.

Outside of that, the cruiser makes a distinct sound that is rather loud but normal. I LOVE that whine baby! Cruisers have their own voice like Porsches have theirs.

i shift at 2500 from first to second, 2700ish into third and around 3k into fourth gear. shifting too early and it won't go anywhere. i don't push it above 3k though as i don't think the old tractor was ever intended to do so, plus there's really no reason to shift so high.

after you drive the truck for a while you'll become comfortable with what it's doing and the noises it makes. now, if there's something seriously making a racket - then you should stop and inspect. the fan clutch will make a lot of noise when you first start the car and let it warm up for a minute. beyond that it should come on when the temperatures rise. keep an eye on your temp and be familiar with normal operations - it shouldn't be pegging out or going too high. if it is, your thermostat is most likely needing attention/replacement.

Peak horsepower is at 3600 rpm. If you need power (acceleration on a hill, climbing a pass, etc) then you need to use the upper rpm ranges. If the motors in good shape, it'll be fine. 4K is the redline, and prolly Mr T was conservative in setting this. Around town, where it's flatter, I often shift below 2500 rpm, just because it's quieter at lower rpm.

When my 60 was on the road, I never had it above 2k unless I was in a big rush. I shifted at 1500 into 2nd, 1700 into 3rd and 1900 max into 4th. These things have so much torque down low that I could get around pretty quickly at that rpm range. However, mine was in really good condition with only 94k miles and a fresh carb as well as manifolds, so my experience might be best case scenario, but still.

I absolutely loved using the lower range while offroading!

I cannot imagine 3600 rpms, but I do agree with what most are saying around town not in a hurry under 2500rpms for sure. However last night I was running a little late coming back from checking the snow level for a future trip and really got into it, and the higher rpms seem to work better, with the 33's and stock (3.73) gears I held it at 3000 and a little over on the downhills, I had no problem flying up hills that if I try and go 65 up them it bogs down and I end up downshifting. by the way 3000 puts me at 80mph not bad for the old dust bucket...And as for the LC whine I was hoping that was normal....

thanks guys.....I guess im just used to a the 22re and the 3.0(very smooth motor).

If you lug it around all the time less than 2k-rpm, your going to load it up and ruin plugs, nor is it a 24 hour Le-mans car. If you put 33s on it you arn't going anywhere unless you run it up to get going. Lots of hills third is too high 2nd too low, you gotta lug it or rev it, keep it below redline and it will be fine. That's why it has a redline, to let you know what is too much..

point being, any thing in excess in brobably not good, don't lug it don't OVER rev it...use the tack.
Just an opinion..

I really have a hard time with these keyboards, that last sentence should read:

Any thing in excess Is Probably not good, don't lug it, don't over rev it..use the tack

Seems these motors are naturally whiney...like a school bus revving in low gear...maybe you are hearing the fan clutch engaged, similar to a 737 taking off under the hood...I love it.
...but not as much as the sewing machine, clickety idle they make.
