I am interested in eventually towing my 80 to the trails in some instances. Is anybody towing their 80? What type of trailer are you using? Any more details on your setup would be appreciated. Pics would be cool!
Thanks
PS - I searched but didn't find quite what I was looking for.
the tow rig will most likely be a class 8 with an RV conversion. I am just trying to see what the gvw is on the trailers people are putting the 80 on and their experiences. I understand the gvw should be approppriate for the weight being carried but I was curious how many people are towing their rigs but apparently not many. I see way more posts about people towing with their 80s than towing the actual 80.
I will not be flat towing it. I should have mentioned that.
I think you need to take your 80 to the scales and weigh it. Depending on how it is equiped and what will be in it at the time you pull it on the trailer will make a real difference in your choices.
There are many "actual" weights out there but you need to know for yourself. I have heard some say it is a 5500 lb rig. I do not know what they have cut off their 80 or not installed on it but you will probably find an "trail ready" rig will be over 6500 and a loaded rig with other mods will push over 7500.
I had my 80 on a scale, it is a very heavy rig based on modifications such as 2 winches, 1/4" wall and plate rear bumper, onboard air, hot water shower, 2 batteries, ..... It was pulling my trailer with my 40 on it. Combined weight was over 13,000 lbs. I have had it just loaded with parts for the trail and gear for 3 days and it was over 7500.
Did I say how important it is to weigh your truck!!! Then decide on trailer and most important spend good money on tie downs and binders.
I now have a Cummins in a Dodge Mega Cab and the 325 horses and 610 foot lbs make it a lot more comfortable when I have the 80 or the 40 on a trailer.
This is how I am getting my 80 and my mini to the trails this year. Last year I used a 20' gooseneck to pull it. A duramax powered 3/4 will pull a 80 just fine. The gooseneck trailer is safer and smother than a bumper pull trailer.
