Hey everyone,

I just picked up a few new 70 series axles and they are a little different. They are high pinion, electric diff locks, and they have "power locking hubs" (electric hubs) and fortunetly for me they are 24v :). I am thinking they came out of a HJZ77 maybe, and from Asia/Europe not OZ (24v). anyone have a clue? I am also looking for specs/manuals on these, again anyone?

One more question, does anyone know how to identify the axle ratio from the markings on the 3 member housing (if thats possible) the housing has a K and a 2 on it.

Thanks,

Michael

My belief is that is it has the 3B, it has 3.73's. If it has the 13B-T, it is 4.11's.

All of the BJ70's I've seen have 3.73's.

Craig.

Wait a minute, it's got diff locks? OK, now I'm leaning towards 4.11's. Sorry, I'm not sure.

What size tires are you running an what is your rpm at 100 kph (60 mph)? That'll tell.

Craig.

it could be 3.7, 4.1, 4.3, 4.56.
it will not be out of a LJ since they are all coil, so HZJ77 or HZJ75 is my guess which means either 4.11 or 4.56

Michael, it is from a 1990+ 70 series. Tell me the axle code and I'll tell you the ratio. No front hi-pinions come in LSD so it's either open or electric locked, in which case it should be obvious.

Most of these electric locking hub axles come from Japan. I haven't seen them from Oz or elsewhere, but they are covered in the general market FSM so they are out there. The FSM for the 1990+ 70 series covers it well.

The K just means it is an 8" ring gear, the 2 means it is a 2 spider, which usually means it is open.

Does it look like this?

front diff

Is it the 8" reverse with coil and panhard mounts like an 80 series? I toured Costa Rica in a 2003 HZJ7(3 I think), It had the same front setup as an 80 series, but with a leaf-sprung 9.5" ff rear end. It too had electric hubs.

radius

I meant radius arms like an 80.

More clear information

Hey everybody,

This is axle onlys so I have no idea what it was in or what the tag plate axle codes were. I do know that it has purches for leaf springs, it is electric diff lock on reverse pinion so I also am pretty sure it is 8". It look identical to the picture (thanks Dave) included the finned calipers black power locking hub housing with toyota in gold letters. I want to thank everyone for the feedback you guys are awesome :)

Where did you come up with those? Are they the same length as the ones off your bj70? What do they usally go for?

SOR or G&Scruiserparts. Between $400-$600. Same width as the 1985-1989 70 series but slightly larger birfields, larger knuckle balls, 92-95 4Runner type brakes and a stronger squarish cross section on the housing. Here are the birfs next to the pre-90 birf:

The knuckle parts do not fit the 40/60/pre-90 70 series.

Sort of a highjack...

Anyone know if the inner axles on 80 series or the late model 70 series, for that matter, neck down in the birf like the early models? On the pre-90 the inner is 27 spline at the birfield vs. 30 spline at the diff.

Thanks for the input...

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the reply's I am pretty sure these are 4.11 gears, I am going to measure one more time to make sure.

In answer to a few of the questions these are the exact width and spring purch width for the 70 series, I am pretty sure at this point that came from an HZJ77.

I got these axles at SOR, Marv gets 850.00 a piece unless you are buying more than one, then you can get a pretty good discount (ok that is all I am saying). I took the last two that had power locking hubs.

Keep in mind if you think the are priced high at SOR that these axle come complete, they even come with tie rod, not to mention rotors, calipers, third member and harness end for the power conectors of the E-lockers.

Cheers,

Michael

cheap way into a front locker... pity about the 8 inch grenade (aussies hate the high pinion diff)

what road? they usually explode in the "bush"

Ok...the Facts...Finally

Hey everyone,

Well I found out for sure that the gears are 4.11 (Awesome!) and I also figured out how the power hubs work. As far as the diff lock and birfields, as far as I can tell they are identical in funtionality and birfield size to my 96' FZJ80, again I am very happy, I have yet to ever break the front end of my 80 series and I wheel it very hard some times.

So it looks like toyota took everything they could from the 80 series design and made up an axle to fit in the 70 series, the purches are perfect on width, even the sway bar is identical to my 87' BJ70.

Here is what I do know for sure to wrap this up:

Axle came out of a 70 series (probably a troopy or pickup) is had 24v electrical system, and was a right hand drive, had new style beefy calipers, birfields, and was the smaller high pinion diff seems identical to my 80 series.

Now just to figure out the wiring on the electric locker, good thing I have a full set of schematics for my 80 series, should help in that regard.

G'Day,

Michael
