At what point did Toyota go to this style of front end? (Grill, headlight, parking light). Was it with the introduction of the 79 Series or did it change during the 79 Series production run?
Thanks

And it changed during the 79 series production run.

The introduction of the "wide nose" corresponded with the release of the V8 diesel (1VD). Also a widened front track.

Thanks guys ....
Next question: Is the Ute only available with the V8 or can you still get the 1HZ in certain markets?

It is available with the 1HZ and 1GR overseas. Here it only has the 1VD.

Some mines use HZ models but they're not emissions compliant so not for road use.

FWIW your photo isn't an australian model/VDJ79. VDJ79s are easy to pick because they have a bonnet scoop, also we're RHD.

Middle East has plenty!

Thanks guys ....

Hello Charles,

The V8 diesel Ute is available in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The bonnet scoop gives it away.

Select markets in Africa, the Middle East and Asia Pacific get the HZJ79. Less stringent requirements regarding power, safety and emissions I guess.

The 79 Series is also available with the V6 gasoline/petrol engine, again for select markets in South America and the Middle East. I remember reading somewhere that mining companies in Australia showed no interest in the 1GR engine.

Both the HZJ79 and GRJ79 share a flat bonnet without scoop.

Basically, I was trying to determine if there was a market where this body style and 1HZ would be paired together and the answer is obviously yes. ...... Thanks guys for the responses.

really nice machines these 79s. but the v8 is an absolute monster after being put in the right hands. also sounds insane.
