Pyrometer install pics wanted - Now Fitted!!

Just wondering if anyone has a picture of their pyrometer probe installation. Specifically on a Toyota 1HD-FT motor but I think the 1HDT manifold is very similar. My preference would be to fit it pre-turbo but also interested in people's experiences with post-turbo installs. I'm not planning on removing the manifold either, I was just going to drill the hole with the engine idling and with plenty of grease on the drill bit. Cheers.

Hi Rick, i'd show you my pyro, but i'm at work and have no pics. Mine is plumbed in post-turbo on my 1HD-FT. I didn't fit an EGT gauge until i installed the 3" mandrel-bent exhaust and larger dump pipe. I'd much prefer pre-turbo too, for an accurate reading of temps entering the turbine housing, but the idea of drilling into the manifold scared me off! The heat-shield would probably need modifying too. Post-turbo is simple and works fine for me. I haven't seen temps over 450 deg c....yet.

Do you have a standard exhaust? I'd recommend at least bolting on a larger dump pipe, which usually have a nut welded on just for a pyro anyway. Keep us posted how you go...
 
Here is mine post turbo on a 1HZ with 1HD-T bits. Mine ended up being post turbo as I stupidly forgot to drill the manifold and couldn't be bothered to strip it all down again. For a gauge I used a Thermoguard from Australia: seen below the stereo. Please ignore the boost gauge which is only cycling - not really running 1.5 bar of boost!!!!

No, I have the standard factory exhaust at the moment. Do you have any recommendation for a dump pipe? I was going to go for a full 3" system Exhaust Shop .Com.au - TOYOTA LANDCRUISER HDJ80 3" PERFORMANCE KITKIT
I'm still keen to install the pyro pre-turbo but it would be handy to see where others have theirs.

Rick, that system doesn't appear to include the turbo dump pipe. I doubt it has mandrel bends either. While it is cheap, you do get what you pay for. For just under $1000 you can get a full 3" mandrel-bent mild steel system, with larger dump-pipe, delivered from Beaudesert Exhausts here in Qld. They also sell just dump-pipes alone and i'd recommend at least changing that. Exhausts are something that you want to do right the first time, so you are not restricted or dissapointed and then have to spend more money later down the track.

Here's a pic showing the big differance between my old standard dump and my new one. You can easily see how it allows the turbo to release those exhaust gases quicker, thus spooling up quicker. :steer:

Drilling the manifold was no big deal.Just nice and steady and plenty of (white) grease.I took the inlet hose off the turbo and just spun the turbine round a few times before starting the engine to just 'flick' through any metal chippings that may have fell in but I reckon the grease catches 99%. Also had a 3" custom bulit SS exhaust fitted since.

Great install Phil, that would be the ideal position for a pyro IMHO. What sort of temps do you see?
 
At a steady 70mph on the flat it runs around 650-700. Pulling a 1.5 ton caravan up grades in top around 60-65mph can get the temps above 1200 quickly but changing down to 4th (it's a 5spd manual) will drop it 100 deg.
The 3" exhaust alone dropped temps 50-100 deg across the rev range. I've done the FT pump tweaks for low down off-boost and low boost but haven't touched the main injection volume adjustment screw.
The biggest headache was finding somewhere to mount the gauges!! Not really happy with the present positioning but it'll have to do for now.
 
Thanks guys, a lot of good pics and info here. I'll probably do mine like Towpack's. I've done a bit more research into that exhaust I was going to get .I called them up and it is a mandrel bent system. The same one (Rage brand) is sold on Ebay from Scott's Rods, who I know well, having done my Range Rover's exhaust for me. Might have to ask him about a dump pipe in his add he suggests "The standard dump pipe on the 80 series is just under 3" and therefore an aftermarket dump pipe in 3" gives a minimal power gain and is unneccessary."

Got my Pyrometer and Boost gauges the other day so thought I'd post up some pics of the install. Pretty happy with them for the price, cost just over $200 AU for both gauges.

This is how they look switched off. The camera ics up the markings easier than the naked eye.


This is how they look switched on (Ignition on). I rotated the pyro in the cup so it's a bit easier to read low numbers as it starts from 200 deg celsius. Looks neater too


And this is how they look at night. The gauge faces dim when the lights are put on


When they are switched on and off they do a bit of a dance and light display. Here they are switching off, they go red, when switching on the gauges light and the needles do a full sweep and the warning lights illuminate. Pretty Cool

**UPDATE**

Temps around 400 degrees C @ 100km/h, boost 5psi @ 100km/h up to 9 psi max. Does this sound about right?
I think I'll up the boost to 11-12 psi and see if it goes any better.

Next, 3" mandrel exhaust....

Did a bit more testing today.

Boost starts from around 1500, but only produces around 3psi, not enough to get it moving quickly. At around 1900-2000rpm, boost quickly rises above 5psi and in normal driving it goes to about 9-10psi when accelerating. Temps can rise up to 550-600 but then drop at cruise.

Steady 100km/h - 450 Deg. C and about 5 psi
Steady 110km/h - 450 Deg. C and about 6psi
Floor it from 100 to 120km/h - Saw close to 700 Deg. C and 13 psi (Boost controller adjusted), but at a steady 120km/h temps drop back to ~500

Fitted the roof rack on and a fair whack of weight and did over 700km today. Temps hang around the 500 Deg. C mark at 110km/h. Up hills temps rise to 600 Deg. C and 12psi, then on the other side ~6psi and 450 Deg. again.
Got to see the overboost light on one long hill, the trans dropped down a gear (Cruise control set at 110km/h) and it just touched 14psi when the light came on for a couple of seconds. I'll have to adjust the boost controller so that I get a max of 13psi I think, at least until I get an intercooler.
As soon as the pedal is off, the temps drop very quickly. The gauge starts at 200 Deg. C and is seldom above this when the throttle is off or idling.

I ordered it through these guys, really helpful in getting it ordered and getting a hold of the specs for Oil sensor, etc...

The gauge pack does EGT, boost, and psi but I think it can be configured to monitor a few different things. While I was doing the install I took all the boards out of the two pieces and hit them with a thick layer of conformal coating, so now they are reasonably able to survive a dunk or two, and are a bit more beefed up from vibration damage (something Iv started doing to all the circuitry in the truck)
If anyone's interested in getting one of these hooked up in a 24V truck give me a shout as I found out the oil sender requires a bit of F-ing around to make work, and BD only sells these things for Yanky trucks so you have to BS the people on the phone if you want any help.

Anyone have some pics to add to this old thread? Diesel rookie here. Studying up on my just race parts gauge install.
