So just placed an order for a new pvc valve and grommet for the 2F as it’s the one tune up bit I have forgotten to replace under my ownership.. looking at other replacement threads here it seems common that the grommet will break and fall into the tube.. any tips on preventing this, I don’t need a 10min job turning into 3 hours.

Almost NEVER need to replace, remove and clean as well as replace grommet. Grommet will be as hard as a rock be careful not to drop pieces into the engine. Soak old PCV in solvent and continue to use. If it is OEM it is a quality piece.

Since removing the grommet is difficult without crumbling, is it ok to just leave the old one in?

Not recommended. It wont seal properly. If it crumbles it gets into your engine.
It’s cheap insurance to replace it.
As noted above, the PCV valve itself rarely goes bad and you just need clean out any gunk and maybe a drop pf oil and reinstall.
