puttin 33's on rub a bit

I think it's not due to the wheel size but the bigger thread that the BFG mud has. Because Fusion Cruiser has 285s and he has about 1/2 left, I tried out yokos muds 285s and MT/Rs and they both had 1/2 of free space.
 
is this when it is stuffed, or just while it is sitting there?

All tires vary between brands.
My 37 inch MTR's measure 36.2 inches.
My 35 inch BFG's measured 33.4 inches. And I have had 33's that measured anywhere from 31.5 to almost 33.

You need a lift to run those tires anywhere but the road.

I have been looking at my wheel wells and tires (GY MTR 285/70/17 - with no rubbing) and have a question about the lift kit comments that abound...

My clearance 'issue' is not with the top of the fender but the front to back measurement of the opening. So if I put a sexy 3" lift, I'm raising the fender but the front to back measurement is still the same. So with the front to back being my problem and with my fancy new lift won't I be in the exact same 'tight situation' when I compress the suspension on one of the front corners?

This is a question that has been bugging me since I first heard about the size limits with and without a lift on the FJC.

Hopefully someone can enlighten me. :popcorn:

Can you measure your tire from the ground to the very top to see how it compares to the GoodYear MTRs ?

You put on that sexy lift and your front and back measurements are now three inches higher...and, without getting into measurements of pi, a circle is the fattest across the diameter. If you're three inches above the diameter then you've got a bit more room front and back.

make sure your tire presssures are exactly the same and that each vehicle is exactly loaded the same....otherwise that measurement won't mean much....

ideally, because of where the tires rub, you want a "corner to corner" measurement at the horizontal centerline (much like a car where the left rear bumper point measured to the right front bumper point is it's "worst case" length)

no surprise that two different tires measure differently, and that one may rub where another doesn't.

Are you suggesting that 'post lift' I will not be able to compress the front suspension? I have to say that is not my past experience. After a good lift I could still bury my wheel in the wheelwell with ease. That means I have the diameter of the tire still trying to fit between the same area of the wheelwell that is causing the problem. Unless we aren't expecting to be able to compress the fronts that far.

I'm still confused. :confused: :)

The wheel isn't going to move a lot front to back as its coil on the back an torsion bar in front. But it will be deflecting some. But it seems like 33 inch the limit for anything stock.

If you really need big tires then start cutting.
 
ive got 33's and a 3' lift on my fj no rubbing no problems its great.
