Do you need trailer brakes to safely tow an M416 with an old 40 with older drum brakes? I want to keep the stock army set up, the parking brake is too cool.

How gutless will I be towing a trailer with the 2f?

If you have the brakes properly adjusted on your FJ40, you should have no problems pulling a fully loaded M416 trailer. We pull the same trailer with an F motor and drum brakes. The drum brakes on the FJ40 are huge. If you slam on the brakes without the vehicle pulling to either side, then the brakes should be adjusted properly. (See the other posts about properly adjusting the drum brakes).

Last year I borrowed a friends trailer and I towed it with the 60 (has a 2f) Both rig and trailer were loaded

On the flats I barley even noticed the trailer back there, had it's usual power.

In elevation/ hills, I was a total slug going up the hills.. but the 60 is a slug in elevation anyway..

So in a nutshell, You'll be a little slower than normal.

Trailer brakes? TRAILER BRAKES? We doan neeed no steeenking trailer brakes.

I've towed M416s and M100s with a variety of '40s, mild to wild. On and off road. Usually loaded well past the official limits of the trailer. We routinely swap the trailer to different rigs while on the trail when there is a breakdown or some other reason to pass the towing duties along.

So long as your '40 is in correct mechanical condition, you will have no problems pulling one of these trailers.

ANY trailer can be a real anchor if the trail is not suitbale for it. But an M416/M100 behind a '40 is a great combo.

Totally agree

Totally agree

Remember those 1/4 ton trailers were originally designed to be pulled by a light, narrow and short truck with a 60 hp motor. The FJ-40 is so much more powerful and substantial than the MB/GPW or even the later M38s, M38A1s or M151s.

So it seems many keep the stock axle? It's only $250 for a new axle with electric brakes and 6lug hubs, but I sure do like the military wheels. Hopefully it will be towable by cruise Moab :). Just not looking forward to guardsmans pass...

I prefer the military axle.

However, one of my M100 trailers has a bunged up axle, and I have not found a replacement military axle, so I may wind up getting an aftermarket axle for it. My problem is I want it to have a mechanical parking brake, like the military axles do.

Search these recent threads, there was info about p-brake's for new trailer axles posted not long ago. Can get that feature included with the service brakes for not a lot more.
