I was talkin about puttin a new clutch in my 83' FJ60, & this guy is tellin me I gotta take off the trans & pull the engine to get the bellhousing off? This can't be right , is it?

So it's pretty standard really? I've changed many clutches in my day...never had to pull an engine. But I've never changed one in a 60 before. Had me freakin out for a sec.

If you pull the transmission and transfer case as a unit, you will have access to the clutch, while the bell housing is still installed on the engine. I have not had to remove the bell housing to replace the clutch. This is the procedure given in the FSM. You don't even have to drain the oil from the transmission or transfer case if you don't want to. I have removed the transmission & transfer case for one reason or another a few times and always by myself.

I did notice the large cover on the bottom of the bellhousing looked like one could slide the clutch out through it. Interesting?!. Thanks, all, for the info.

I'd just pull the transmission and transfer. It's pretty easy and maybe 200 pounds. The motor pull is a lot harder and 750 pounds. Take your pick.

I believe in work smarter...not harder. Think I'll go with the trans/transfer pull.

However, depending upon the tools you have it might actually be easier to pull the motor. I did it that way once or twice in 60s because I had a cherry picker and not a tranny jack. My advice would be to go rent a tranny jack for the weekend.

I have a Motorcycle Jack/Lift. Just for the record...this works really well as a trans jack. I have used it before. Raises up about 24" , has a large surface area & strap mounts. Just a tip if you happen to have one handy.
