UPDATE..........

Hey Guys,

Middle Eastern Member here :)

I've introduced myself on the board with some info for anyone who remembers me, been lurking through the tons of info on here.

I need some help regarding the factory 80 PTO winch, couldn't find sufficient information on the subject..

Basically, i purchased a kit locally which was supposed to be RTR. The guy i got this from told me all i need to do is install the winch and run the drive shaft to the Center diff. He gave me an extension which he told me to bolt up to my center diff in order of attaching the winch's D/S. Got everything installed only to find out that the entire Transfer case needs to be swapped. I did not have bolts on the side of my transfer case to bolt up the winch gear which attaches to the driveshaft.

Spoke to the PO of the winch and he offered swapping T-Cases. Took a spin in his truck and noticed the 4H does not engage (both trucks are Part-Time 4x4). the Low gear does when activated but the high doesn't. He told me all i needed was an actuator which i can take from my current T-case but the garage told me his entire Tcase needed a rebuild and i did not want to venture off and potentially loose 4wd!

Basically, i need to know the different types of transfer cases offered on the 80. If anyone can provide a PTO ready Tcase i can purchase.

Another inquiry i have, if i eventually swap my truck out to a H55 5-Spd stick, am i going to need to look for a different tcase to bolt up to the manual or can i use the same Tcase on the A343 auto?

Help guys please, i am stuck with a PTO winch i cannot use and the PO bailed out on me

Hope my post is clear enough to understand the situation. I have attached a picture of the parts i have and a pic of the winch installed on the vehicle.

Thanks

Moe

None of the North American 80s will have a PTO winch. I'm not even sure if any of the Japanese imports have it - I've only seen factory electric winches.

That being said, you're probably best off searching in Australia or in the Middle East for parts.

From your photo, I don't see the PTO gear case that attaches to the transfer case. Here's a diagram of it:

And here's the cover on the transfer case where the PTO gear case attaches:

It looks like you'll have to add the PTO gear inside the transfer case as well. There may be a spacer there now?

And as far as I know, the H55 was not an option on the 80 Series. Only the H140F, H150F and H151F. All will work with the stock transfer case.

I just found this photo of the PTO gear case attached to the transfer:

Wow man awesome info.. I am truly impressed.

I tried looking for a pto ready tcase in the Middle East with no luck finding anything. They seem to be close to extinct unfortunately. I have no connections in Australia to source a unit and have it shipped here (any leads are welcome). I am aware USDM 80s were not offered with winches butwas hoping some Jdm models had the option, if I were to find a parts truck stateside.

The first pic of the part which attaches to the tcase is in the plastic bag in my first photo. It also includes the gear protruding from your diagram. My stock tcase does not have that cover in your second attachment. It's molded shut from factory which is why I believed it was a complete different unit.

I h55 was a typo, I meant h151f for the transmission. Are you sure the same tcase from the a343 would bolt right on?

Thank you for your help. Much appreciated. I will lift the truck and look under it once more to make sure I didn't miss the opening on the tcase. Installing the pto gears in there is not a problem granted I can order the parts needed from Toyota. Everything associated with the pto winch seems discontinued. I can always source an electric winch locally but it's sad to have a pto go to waste when I have 80% of the parts :(.

I think all of the UK 12 valve diesel auto 80's had transfer box's with the removable plate and gear inside. Not sure if that helps you as I imagine the cost of shipping from the UK would be an issue but there are plenty of them being broken for parts.

Are they usually part time or full time 4wd? I'd love to get my hand on a full time 4wd transfer case with a PTO.

All full time. The PTO unit itself can be expensive to add though and then you have to also add drive shafts depending what you're doing with the PTO.

You'll need a h1fa transfer case, these are factory part time cases and come on the Australian Standard and RV models (the one's with barn doors)

The PTO drive that bolts to the side of the transfer is very rare, even in Australia, I imported mine for Japan. not cheap...

I have a part time h1fa but it doesn't have the darn pto cover :'( - I also noticed today that my 80 came with an A442F from factory. I was under the impression all newer 80s had the A343F

I thought pto s only came on part time tcases for some reason

Hey guys,

Just to update this thread.. I ended up installing the PTO and boy what a mess it was.

I ended up having to replace my entire center diff with a unit i sourced from the Junk yard i actually bought the PTO at.

Everything was jammed from just sitting there, cleaned the internals, installed the diff and went for a drive.. The whine was so loud it sounded like a supercharger had been installed on the truck.

Looked everywhere for a rebuild kit with no luck. Ended up using my stock (part time) unit as a doner.. Opened both up, turned out they were quite different on the inside. The technician who performed the job is great with gears, he started using different gears and bearing from my factory CND and testing until it all worked. very VERY faint whine now (sort of expected from a truck of its age). My only issue now is that theres is a leak from the top of the newly sorted center diff, need to get that addressed and i should be good to go.

I bought an electrical winch replacement bumper from the dealership since they did not carry a PTO winch bumper. Thought they looked similar, all went well only the opening at the top of the bumper by the grille is not large enough to control the winch activation lever on the top of the unit. I'm currently looking into modifying (extending the leaver an inch or two for it to be accessible).

The other issues im still having. I started feeling a faint vibration from the front end, could this be due to the newly mounted drive shaft? Not bothering me much but i'm just hoping its not something wrong.

Another issue is that when looking at the front of the car, you can see the winch fairlead is offset to the driver side. Its pretty annoying, my mechanic told me he would need to loosen gear mounts and shift the whole thing to the passenger side.. Didn't sound too right to me although this whole install is a learning experience for me.

Thirdly, my H/L selector lever is pushed far forward. So much so that its actually stressing the leather/vinyl boot on the dash.

I've invested close to $2000 up until now and STILL counting. Boy this was alot worse than i initially expected but im getting there... Slowly but surely.

The winch is working at least haha.

I've attached the only pic i have for now.. was too busy and worked up to take any through out the install (sorry for that, i'm sure many would've loved to see how that went), I'll take some more this evening and post them too. Let me know if you'd like to see any specific shots.. The pic of the bumper on here is my stock bumper modified for the application. That didn't go to well which is why i ditched if for a new one with a factory opening. You can see from the pic though how the winch is slightly offset.

Thanks for your help throughout guys.

you need a special gearbox, with the opening and inside gearwheel. its 10 bolts, and not fit bj40 or 70models witch have 6 bolts.
only the lc 80 model fits en from the special model like my car. it was aery expensive option, parts are 10000€ complete set up.
you need also a clutch and selector handle inside the cab.
H55f does not fit in the lc 80 i now off.
only the 80 series have central differential lock, no other toyota has it. its copy of the range rover classic.

i recently bought a nose cut of 1hdft engine that comes complete with A442f gearbox and pto. i dont need the pto since the 80 is only for overland. i want to sell it for usd3000. comes complete with pto handle, shaft, gearbox and transfer case with pto. all you need to add on is the roller.
