Hi there, my PS Belt squeals and pulls to a halt when turning at low speeds/idle. No problem at higher speeds .

I have installed a new belt and tightened the belt to an appropriate tension but it still squeals. My next idea is that this would be the PS pulley as it wobbles a lot during idle. I've attached a video, any ideas?

How do you know you have "appropriate tension?"

If that belt is stopping, it's not tight enough.

I have had this belt retightened and replaced over the last several months, have also replaced PSP and alternator which has involved removing and tightening belt several times, the problem has never resolved. My idea and a mechanics is now the bearings on the smog pump pulley, thank you for your reply.

So, what is the appropriate tension? From the FSM.

Have you actually used a tensiometer to check it?

From the picture above, it looks like that belt is sitting too deep in the pulley. Please see the correct OEM belt part numbers and belt routing below.
The correct belt is 90916-02193-77

In addition to what I posted above, the 3FE has a poor outer belt design. As the PS tensioner is moved outward to increase belt tension, it decreases the wrap on the crank and PS pullies. I've run into a slipping belt in offroad conditions when heavily torquing the steering wheel.
A way to minimize slipping would be to loosen the tensioner and move the PS pump so it's at a slight angle, then adjust the tensioner to get things snug.

However, if you don't have the correct OEM belt in place to begin with, this is a waste of time. The 3FE hates aftermarket parts.

Thank you, just ordered this belt to my local toyota dealer now. should be picking it up tomorrow, I was previously using a gates belt: TR22657. Hope this resolves the squeal. Appreciate it.

I just watched the video you posted.
The PS pulley is not slipping. The belt is slipping on the crank pulley.
Either the belt is too loose or there is oil/grease/crap on the crank pulley.

From the FSM that you can download from the resources section or purchase from me. While I have only used a belt tension gauge once or twice, I have found that particular belt needs to be tighter than you think. The less wrap on the pullies, the tighter the belt needs to be.

Thanks for the help Jonsfeld! I picked up belt "90916-02193-77" today and it has fixed several issues! Squeaky PS resolved, voltage drops at low RPMS solved, and the alternator is running much more consistent. The OEM belt is much thicker than TR22657 and affects the speed of the alternator pulley a significant amount.

It sounds to me like you need to replace all your belts. OEM part numbers in post #5.
Always use OEM parts when available. The 3FE hates aftermarket parts.
