Great work west aussie. I like the stock look from its birth date and wish I could rebuild mine with the paint it came in but living near the ocean I have no choice but to coat the steel inside and out.

im running out of hours but the big bits are slowly coming together. during the afternoon i wandered into my local shop to play a part is rebuilding the diff. never built a diff before so was very interesting for me; swapped out plenty in my time but i usually manage to find what i need if the 40/70 series department. after lots of shim making we used the spacer from a donor 45 diff for the pinion; had to file it down a bit to get the right preoad. the new sidebearings never arrived so went with what we had; they werent really the issue. work in progress and the main offending pinion bearing

anyways got it home and slapped the diff in. was cleaning axles and whatnot for reinstall when i noticed this. i have mentioned the po broken axle; this was the other side. twisted spline complete with cracks ready to go

i do however take a perverse delight in the work battle scars of my old tojos. knew there we a pair of 25 axles in the junk shed from my aforementioned 25 bones. dug out same and praised my late fathers (which i inherited) propensity for never throwing away anything that may be of use. bless him! even had a choice of 2; though i naturally close the axle that had not had the wheel studs stolen for something else. next was a date with the grinder wire wheel.

second pic is diff installed with a little raddle can bling courtesy of the lads in the shop.

final pic is my next move. the main positive feed from battery to starter; of a little concern where it passes under the gearbox. got this pulled as last job tonight after i fitted the shaft and happened to be laying there with the right socket within reach

You are doing a great job. Now you are a diff guro as well. luckie you had an axel. Hope it all goes well for the weekend. I like the mobile workbench the diff was on, real aussie.
:steer:

Hi Henry I have not been on since Christmas to give you help. You are doing great job love silver paper on vacuum leak. The core plugs you need are dome type welsh plugs. I found aftermarket stainless ones, still had to grind OD down a little. My rear cab mounts had no extra plate ,it had cracked through. I will be rubber mounting these. keep up good work. cheers Fred

thanks all for the kind comments. good to hear from you fwed; you been mia for a while.

so back to my story. friday was the last chance to make things happen. fabbed up a battery case to replace the rusted out original

it was all about cable ties! hooked up the darth vader light and got power to the external plug at the passengers feet. found an old trouble light among some junk i had bought and got all that working. dont know the history of it. what does ome look like?

pondered the light switch a little more. found this information among a 1966? book i have but it didnt tell me much! power leaves the switch in position 3, but where it goes or where i lose it i know not. reinstalled the light switch

while i installed the fueltank and seats my brother tacked the rotten old tray. we just screwed some ply straight over the existing broken boards; did the whole tray in a couple of pieces

all was pretty much together. there were some last minute dramas with a leaking oil line and waterpump gasket but we sorted all this. finally fueled up and went for the first decent test drive well after dark. the workspace was getting very cluttered as the night wore on. here another of those aussie mobile workbenches that someone mentioned!

all went reasonably well and was lotsa fun to be out and about in her. stayed a couple of days. the trip home did not go 100pc to plan and arrival home was something of an anti-climax....

everyone had fun and we all needed a rest after that one! the issue was a blown head gasket. didnt get her hot and sure no damage; just noticed a slight external squirt on the way home. towed her to a nearby homestead and went back the next day on a retrieval mission. pulled the plugs and cranked the motor and didnt get any water out of the plug holes so drove her on the trailer. so head off is next move. i was planning on pulling the sump anyway so do i get excited and put rings and shells through this motor while i at it? perhaps, perhaps not will decide when i get to this, compression is not too bad and pretty even and i reckon a valve grind will perk things up. gotta get busy with work so this all down the track a bit. dont want to pull the head until i have time to finish the job. and need to do a swivel rebuild. anyways it was all a lot of fun. in the meantime the oil lines, radiator cap and battery are back in project patina so she is still my daily runabout for now.

Looks like a great project good luck
