Project Canyonero - GMC i5 swap into FZJ80

Different which is cool, but unless I missed something, why not just go with say a 5.3 LS?

18-20mpg may be doable with a completely stock 80. As you weigh her down with armor, tires and lift, you'll be seeing more like 15mpg. Still less engine weight and a flat torque curve is always a good thing.

Curious if the OP will be able to tune the torque converter lockup on this PCM.

My completely stock 80 averages 12. The 3f-e is stupid reliable, and super simple. But, it's also very thirsty and pretty slow. This swap looks very promising. I'll be watching.

Wow. Feb.28 was my last post on this. Ya'll probably thought this project went south. Far from it. There was a big delay in getting the parts fab'd for the trans to TC adaptor. While waiting for that, the tedious task of wiring was being tacked. To date this project is roughly ~80% complete. I just added a few more albums with a ton of pics.

Tasks completed summary:

TC adaptor
TC shifter bracket
Motor mounts. Motor/trans and TC is in for good now.
AC lines made
fan
power steering
AT shifter modified and installed
fuel pump, filter & fuel lines
exhaust
~70% of the wiring
cold air intake w/MAF sensor

Things left to do:

drive shafts
Radiator install and hoses
AC condenser install (had to get a new-to-me one)
trans. cooler and hoses
TC wire harness
connect AC hoses
Make fiberglass fan shroud
Tach Adaptor
fuse panel wiring
battery cables
grounding straps
rest of the misc. wiring

I'll post some more pics with details of the recent progress soon.

The holy grail of this project. The 4L60 trans. to stock transfer case adaptor. A handful people were involved in creating this adaptor and it cost a hell of a lot less than the a pre-made one.

So that adaptor is good for the 4wd transmission output shaft length?

The shaft adapter was made to fit the 2wd 4L60. We are not sure if it would work with a 4wd trans. as we don't have one to compare. Would the splines be the same? One would think so.

Not sure about the splines, but the output shaft length is significantly different in this context so I guess the answer is no. ;-)

I love a good swap thread. Especially out-of-the-box ones. Keep up the good work!

Wasn't the Canyonero the vehicle that would sponatenously combust into flames!

CANYONERO!!!
