Hey guys

First off wanna say hello, i'm new to this forum but also new to 4WD's and my new (old) FJ62

Basically dudes, hoping someone might be able to help me...

I have a 1985 FJ62 Wagon 3F petrol engine with 358,000k's on the clock. Im slowly getting to know her and build a little trust in her. I have done a total of 3500 k's in her now since i bought her about 2 and a half months ago.

About a 1000 k's ago (roughly) i noticed the temp guage gradually rising easch time we drove her, i.e. when i bought it it never went higher than 1/4 on the guage, now after gradual increases over the last 6 weeks i am up to 1/2 on the guage at all times, whether its a cold morning or a hot day, the only difference is how far the gauge rises after the engine is turned off.

So... What was new when i bought her (no idea of how old, but going on looks i'd say couple months or so)

Radiator, Radiator hoses and heater hoses behind fire wall, water pump, belts and alternator.

What i've done to try and sort the problem: new rad cap, checked thermostat but was already removed (understandable as we live in a warm climate/Western Australia!?) New coolant flushing engine and rad before hand, blown through air filter.

What i havent yet done: flushed the smaller hoses through to the heater matrix or changed the fan clutch.

I know the obvious answer is go and flush the hoses then ask but stupidly forgot when i did the whole system and thought i'd as before loosing loads of the expensive coolant i've just put in.

What do ya recon or does anyone know of something else these engines have common problems with?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as i said im a newbie with my cruiser and want her to last :-)

Oh yeah, its not head gasket as far a i can see as doesn't use any more than i would imagine for a lump of this age and exhaust is dry.

Cheers dude

Welcome! There is a ton of info on engine temp if you do a search. Mine runs 2/3 to 3/4 on the temp gauge, no matter the outside temp. Seems like you are running cold, which probably means a bad, or badly installed thermostat.

I have heard people say it's better to run with a thermostat than without. They're a cheap part, might want to try it. Your engine isn't running hot, just warmer than what you are used to looking at on the gauge. A pretty old gauge with old connections and wires... I saw a thread just recently regarding gauges that spike. Try a search.

Thanks for the input guys, i agree that normally 1/2 on the guage isn't too bad especially for an older engine but it smells hot, you know that real obvious coolant smell you can smell a mile off when an engies running warm! i got that smell, like i said, definately not dangerous yet but its getting warmer, by the journey i recon!?

Hi Guys

Ok, so i've got to the point now where it must be the fan clutch.

So i've read loads of threads and how to's on re filling them, bought a tube of silicone oil from toyota and pulled mine apart.

Im now sitting at the table looking at all different pictures on the internet and the tube of genuine toyota oil in front of me and all are a nice golden oil colour.

Inside my clutch is grey oil? a kinda dark primer colour!? Anyone know why/what this is? a different kind of oil or because of a problem etc?

Also just to mention, i didnt see any oil leaking anywhere before taking it apart (although clutch could have been a bit dryer/cleaner on the outside) but as soon as i split the two halves there is now a very tiny however noticeable amount leaking from the centre down the hub (maybe due to the vaccum being broken when taken apart?)

Please help, as would really like to get the truck back on the road soon and dont want to shell out for a new clutch if i dont have to.

Cheers
Adam

I think I'm missing something here. The temp gauge sits a 1/2 way. What is the problem?

Hey Cruzerman

I only used the gauge reading whilst explaining the problem as its my only visual aid to show how much my engine temp is rising over how many k's/how much time. It used to sit on 1/4 on the guage and was running sweet now up to just over 1/2. The engine is running too hot whatever the gauge says, can smell it, hear it and feel it whilst driving.

No worries now, think i found the problem, think the shaft bearing is shot and has contaminated the oil over time hence the gradual problem. Ordered a new one yesterday and will open it up and check settings and oil level before installing it. Fingers crossed

Will keep you posted

Hope that fixes your issues. Good luck.
