Probs with starter...I think. (1 Viewer)

On my rig, everything comes on like it should it's just the only thing missing is the sound of the engine. The battery cable appear to be the original as this isn't an area that I haven't had a chance to get to yet. The prob would only happen about once a year so I didn't really worry about it. Now it is happening quite often. It seems as though it would be a rather simple fix but it seems to have eluded many. thanks:bang:

Changed out the battery and still have problem of not turning. Although, I noticed that if I put it in park, shut the rig off and it rolls forward and stops (I don't use the parking brake very often) It seems to start up. Could the fact that it rolls forward trigger something? I may just be hoping for an answer. Also, I didn't clean the ground that goes on the engine block. How can I get to that one and should I be putting a grease or something on the grounds? The grounds are located at the battery to the fender, starter to the frame and battery to the engine block. Am I missing any? thanks:bang:

This might not be of help, but I'm getting the same symptoms, I'm going to try a new battery cable set today... My negative cable was fraying and snapped sunday. I reconnected it from where it had snapped, without grounding it to the body because I didnt have enough slack to do so... it started up a couple of times right after I fixed but now it is doing what yours is doing. Reason I tell you all this is because I'm assuming right now that cables are the problem since they broke and now this is result. When you get in and turn your key to try to start it, is there no noise at all coming from the starter? In my case when I try to start it there is no clicks or anything and the Battery Light dims and battery voltage gauge drops while holding it to start. I tried jumper cables and that didnt work so its not the battery. My brain hurts from thinking about all this lol:bang: To reiterate... Battery cable broke (obviously old and no good) and now this happens. Ill post up later and let you know how it works for me...

Yeah, no cranking, just lights come on. I've replaced the ign switch, new batt and cleaned the NSS. I'm going to reclean the grounds but not sure I found them all or if i should put a grease or something on the grounds. yeah, I've been dealing with this constatnly for about 3 months now:bang: ryan

So I have pretty much the same thing happening to mine occasionally. Like someone else said it seems to come on more when the engine is hot. I had mine do this in the middle of a trail after we stopped for a second. I held up the line until this guy came along with a great little fix. He had me place the key in the "ON" position then with a long alligator clip connected one end to my starter and then just bumped the other end against the positive terminal of the battery. The truck fired right up! I asked his opinion as to why this happens. He gave me some long technical explanation that it's just Toyota crummy wiring and that occasionally you get a big voltage drop along the way and you don't have enough to get the starter going. Hope this helps. I loved his fix so now I just keep that alligator clip and I don't need to have anyone jump or tow me.

mine ended up being the starter, i used the old hit it with a hammer trick and had to do it a couple times but it has happened since. After crossing some deep creeks, things get wet and corroded and stuck. try hitting the starter with a hammer next time that happens. see if that works. dont understand the internals of it but something gets stuck
