ok..this is the question I have. How much it cost to rebuilt a 4.5 FZJ engine? The car overheated, knocking sound now. Or better just to replace a brand new engine from toyota? car has lockers front and rear, probably need a new master cylinder for the brake, power steering is leaking badly. Has almost 200k thinking about getting another cruiser , the seller ask for $2999, what u guys think?

confused???

Is this YOUR 95? Or is this a different truck? If different, what year, etc? pics?

no, is not my 95. mine is working just fine =) is a 96 black color cruiser, I dun have the picture, is in san antonio. thinkign about buying it.

Why?

just to built another one and possibly sell mine like black better !!! =)

engine...

Ranma,

A dealer installed engine will run as much as a good running cruiser, same year or newer. (7-9k)

If you just like black better, or want a newer, different equipment, etc, just find a good running black one. I saw one for sale that the add claimed was locked, 97, 125k or so, for $11 in the cars.com section of the dallas paper about a month or so ago. It appeared not to be alone, either.

The guy asking 3-4k or whatever is asking too much (IMO). Offer him $1500 if you like it, knowing that even if you do the work yourself you'll spend 4-5 getting it up to speed.

good luck!:grinpimp:

I'd go 2K and do a FI SBC swap. That is the plan when my 4.5 goes T.U.

by the time you get a running engine in this one you will may or may not be in the hole value wise,

If you are sure you are going to keep it a wile a rebuild might not be a bad idea if you can do the pull, teardown, measurement, reassembly and installation youself. you will have a fresh motor for possbily less than what used cruiser with a running engine would go for, depending on how bad the damage is, I would try offering $1,500 for it.

If you are going to pay soemone to do the work forget it you will be way to far into the hole for a 200K mile 80 series.

new long block from Toyota is over 12K

beaware, black is hot in the sun and shows dirt badly, (my 96 is black)

hmm, looks like it is not a good deal unless I do the work myself. I will have to have someone to swap the engine for me since I do not have a garage. I might pass in this case unless he is willing to go less than $2k like u guys suggested!!Thanks :)

What is the body and interior conditions?

sent you a pm.

I think it's more than that to rebuild. And $12K a brand new Engine plus the labor to install it.

How much can it cost to have the block bored over, the crank turned, rods resized, new pistons/rings/bearings, grind the valves, new springs etc? It certainly can't cost that much?!?!?

If you can get that truck for $2-2.5K and have the mechnical know how it could be a great truck. Assuming the transmission isn't slipping either and it needs paint/bodywork etc.

I bought my LX450 in excellent condition this month with 130K miles for $11K. Everything works and has elockers and is fully loaded also as a price reference.

Sounds like mucho $$$$. Granted my experience is not a 1FZ, but I was able to rebuild a 2F for less than half that after everyone on here said it would be 5K to rebuild a 2F, and that included a new head to replace the one that overheated and cracked.

I got some comically high guestimates from engine shops in the beginning. The place that rebuilt mine was a shop that rebuilt a lot of big straight-6 diesel motors. Much less tooling to fiddle with... much less cost to you!

Yes rebuilt and they bored it .020 and a new timing chain cover

Seems to be much more thant I expected, think I am gonna pass and look for another one or stick with my 95 instead:D

www.cruiserparts.net has 1FZ's with various mileages ranging from $1500-$2500

You might want to contact some of the vendors and mechanics on the forums to see if they can give you some figures--thinking Robbie (out on tour though) or Jim Chenoweth or Slee....

Good luck.

Do talk to Jim C.

Awhile back we exchanged a few emails. He is very knowledge and definately qualified to do the job. When the time comes, he will be the one i use as he put up with my numerous question and was great to talk to.

Obviously the rebuild price will be dependent on what you have done but as i recall, a basic rebuild and bored out slightly larger is around 4500, give or take.

Pull the 1fz yourself and i believe it will cut the cost way down.
