All,

I've been in the market for a few weeks now and came across a '08 GX470 Titanium Metallic with Dark Gray interior Non-Nav. It looks like a great vehicle(shiny original paint, rust free, very clean interior with minor cracks/wear on front seat bolster) that was just traded in at the Lexus dealership.

They are asking $19k for it with all fluids being changed (engine/diff) and their Lexus 161pt inspection completed. Checked Lexus owners and all it has had routine oil changes, recent brake service, new battery replaced.

Based on what I've seen, is $17-18k reasonable. They have ridiculous dealer fees ($1298 and negotiable) so I figure bringing down their asking price.

Thoughts?

I love the 2008s and 2009s, but that's a high price at $19K. If the timing belt has been done and low miles, then mabye.

Timing belt, water pump, and fluids can be done at an independent mechanic for about $1000, so I would look for a 2008 with about 100k miles and no maintenance. I would spend $1000 to refresh all the fluids, timing belt, belts, water pump, etc.

Then again, there's a lot of GX470s in So Cal.

Thanks for your input @HomersCanyonero . I agree it's a little on the high side but it's just hard to find a decent sub 100k mile GX non-nav. I test drove another one today with 111 and it was just not taken care of with a price of $17k.

It's just difficult to find a fair price for certain specs. Most non-navs I've seen are white/tan which is not my preference.

Thinking more along the lines of $17k since they will be doing certain maintenance to put it on the lot. Thoughts?

08 with low miles, no nav, and rust free frame? Sounds like a reasonable price to me. I agree, you should negotiate those fees into the price.

Timing belt should be done around 100k or 10 years. Lexus should have changed it. If they didn’t, bring that to their attention and see if they’ll change it pre-purchase.

I don't know why having non-navigation is a big deal. I have nav on my 2003 and it's not a problem at all. I don't use the sucky oem navigation and instead use Gaia Maps and Google Maps on my 6S iPhone to navigate. The climate controls work fine on the navigation models.

If I had to do it over, I would get a KDSS model in any year. I just like the newest GX470 models with the clear rear lenses. That's why I changed mine rear lenses to clear.

I paid $18,000 OTD this past November for an '07 with 102k, from Houston its whole life so spotless chassis, great paint, and great interior. Every option except KDSS, including rear entertainment. Timing belt done @ 90k by Lexus. Not calling it a steal by any stretch, but the ones here in the rust belt were fetching similar prices, some with cracked dashes, all with corroded frames. The dealer I bought mine from travels to Houston from Parkersburg, CO once a month and buys up every clean GX he can find to sell in Colorado where 4x4 is a must. I paid $875 shipping for mine to save a trip.

Lexus should have changed it? I assume changed it through customer pay correct?

Customer can always reject recommendation to change timing belt, so Lexus won't change it unless customer agrees to pay. Check the Lexus service records. It should say if it was done or not. By the way, some dealers go by miles and forget about the age of the timing belt.

If you want to put in your own head unit, I suppose that's a good reason to get a non-nav.

I would have been fine with a non-nav unit, just worked out this way. Only thing this doesn't have that I find useful is a USB input for the audio, but Bluetooth and AUX-IN pretty much make that a non-issue.

Factory recommended intervals are ~90k miles or 10 years. If I was in your shoes, I would ask the dealer to cover the timing belt replacement before I purchased because it is over its 10 year interval.

Essentially, you would be buying a vehicle that will immediately (per factory recommended service intervals) require a timing belt change.

I just looked it up and apparently it's 90k miles or 108 months, which is 9 years. Not 10 years.

I bought the asin timing belt kit with water pump and pulley plus drive belts on amazon, and found an independent mechanic to do the work.

Total should be less than half what dealer is quoting you. An alternative Just in case you buy it and have to change these items out.

Explain to them you're not going to purchase a $19k vehicle that is in immediate need of a major required service the PO neglected. What next, bald tires, bad brakes, and dirty oil? Is this a reputable dealer or a buy-here-pay-here???

Lexus dealership.

Worst case, I can have it done outside the fact.

FYI, I paid $12,900.00 OTD for a 2004, 1 Owner, So CA, GX with 73,435 miles on her. After the purchase, I did most everything as preventive maintenance. Brakes, Hubs, CVC's, Radiator, Coils, Plugs, TB, WP, Batteries, (We added a second). Shocks, Coils, I am sure there was more.
We love the GX, runs and drives perfect. At this point, I would drive the GX anywhere.

I paid $18,500 for a 104k mile 2009 with Nav. Absolutely everything works, rust-free, up to date on timing belt, water pump, all fluids, new radiator and new brakes in the past 15k. BUT, I had a decent argument with the Lexus dealership when I discovered the rear diff was missing a tooth on the ring after driving it for 200 miles. After a lot of arguing with various managers there, the end result was me retroactively purchasing a warranty from them (which I would not have normally done), but the warranty nearly covered the cost of a new differential to break even, and I had up to 33"s and a 2" inch lift written into the scope of the warranty. So I ended up at about $21k out the door, but I have an unlimited powertrain warranty that allows mods, so...

Now that I finish writing that, I'm not sure it's really a helpful comparison. The lesson is to make sure you get a copy of their "Lexus 161 point inspection" and get an independent inspection and settle any discrepancies. I was told by their service manager "you can't expect us to find everything with just an inspection." Don't trust the dealership further than you can throw them...
