Brought home my first GX, coming from the Jeep world. Slowly getting a handle for some of the quarks that come with learning a new platform. Spent a while, and a good bit of money, trying to figure out why the A/C was blowing constant and not cycling the compressor on and off like it should, which caused the system to freeze up and not blow through the vents after a while. That was a paperclip wedged into two terminals of the compressor relay....so then we needed to find the fault in the system...that seems to be the climate control panel in the dash. From what I've found here, thanks to the nav/non nav swap threads, someone likely tried to replace this part already using the incorrect unit with a mismatched a/c amplifier. last two digits being 70 on the one I removed and based on my build date, it should be 72. I did find a wrecked one with the exact same build month/year and the new part is in route as I type this...expensive booger so fingers crossed that fixes me up. My vent trim pieces are cracked up from people being in the dash before me and my audio isn't coming out of all my speakers so those need replaced if any of you have them or have recommendations on aftermarket. A previous owner swapped in an alpine head unit using AXTO-TY1 amplifier interface and AXSWC which is not functioning correctly either. Getting conflicting info as well on these components as the manufacturer states the GX470 is not listed as a compatible vehicle however looking at crutchfield's website, this is what they sell for correctly installing the alpine head unit...anyone with experience using either of those components, some input would be much appreciated. I'm starting with the wiring instructions and will confirm the wiring to be correct, then will dig into the internal settings and programming....unless there is a better option for a couple hundred dollars that would save me all this diagnostic trouble.

Lastly, about halfway through the drive home with the GX, I noticed a humming/whine coming from the front of the vehicle that increases in pitch with acceleration, decreases in pitch with deceleration and does not change/stop when turning. I did not find any leaks when underneath at the time of purchase but am suspecting transfer case fluid to be low. Will be changing that before driving any more, hopefully the few hundred miles I put on it after noticing that sound will not have caused any permanent damage. I initially thought it to be a CV axel as I bought it with a torn boot, the axels have since been replaced though and the sound persists. Thank you.

Welcome! Happy to have a jeep convert in the forum.

If you're going to replace the transfer case fluid I would do the same for the front and rear diffs while you're down there. Go easy on the front diff drain plug because it isn't hard to strip out.

I had the guys check this when they did the front axles. The drain plug was stripped. They sampled the fluid from the fill and said it appeared new. A previous owner likely did it. Something I’ll tackle when I replace LCA’s. Watching a ball joint that has a torn boot at the moment. When it starts loosening, LCA’s are getting replaced. I do plan to do the rear with the t case though and transmission drain and fills at the next two oil changes. She’s got 248K on her but does drive quite well and is in pretty good shape for the age and miles. I’ve got new air bags and rear bump stops to install (po only replaced one bag, the other is original so I’ve opted to replace both).

Rewired my radio harness lastnight and I’ve got that new AC module on its way to arrive tomorrow. Should have the dash column at least partially put together while I wait on what I’m going to do about the cracked vent trim pieces.

Transfer case and rear diff fluids changed. The front end growl/groan is still present. Will road test it again putting the transmission in neutral to help eliminate the transmission. I greased up the driveshafts while I was underneath, couldn't get my grease gun on the input side of the transfer case on the front drive shaft though. Will need a bendy hose for that not a fixed.

Suspecting a wheel bearing at this point. Will start diagnosing that. Anyone use 2003-2022 4Runner GX470/460 4x4 complete KOYO or NSK Frt Wheel bearing assembly | yotabearingsandhubs - https://www.yotabearingsandhubs.com/product-page/2003-2012-4runner-gx470-460-4x4-complete-koyo-front-wheel-hub-bearing-assembly. Looks to be like what the guys at bluepit sell but for a bit better price. Just dropped $2K in the GX on the front end so far, might DIY these hubs rather than have the shop tackle them. I've done wrangler hubs before, I suppose it can't be much different.

Defiantly a wheel bearing. Getting into a parking lot the noise goes away on a left turn with a bit of speed. Ordered 2x hubs/bearings from yota hubs and bearings. Wiring is fixed on the speakers, got the new climate control installed and it fixed my AC problem. My old mismatched one has already been sold to a fellow member and is shipped his way.
