Pre or Post 2003, best to get?

I'm currently an 80 guy, but looking to improve the fleet with the addition of a 100 series for a family car. I've read here that there are improvements on the 03 and newer that make it more desirable. What are they?

By family car, I mean street use only. My 80 will do the dirty work, when needed. I may also decide to buy and sell these. There seems to be a market even if gas is 5.00 a gallon.
