I'm not sure if i'm missing something or what but when i tried to pull my powersteering pump there seems to be a bolt on the back side that won't come out far enough to clear the pump because it's hitting the exhaust manifold. this is driving me crazy because all i'm trying to do is replace my intake manifold gasket. the haynes book describes taking what seems like everything off the driver side of the engine. is this right? or is there an "express" way of replacing this gasket?

Bolt

I just replaced my PS pump...I've got aftermarket headers so yours may be different.

I had the same problem with the long bolt. I just backed out the bolt as far as it would go, and the pump slid right out. I did not need to remove the bolt to get the pump to come out, just backed it out enough so that the threads no longer caught.

The PS pump bracket has a vertical slot on the back bolt, so all you have to do is loosen it enough to break its grip and remove the front two bolts - it should lift out straight up with the rear bolt still in the pump and just clearing the exhaust manifold.

I've just gone through the reverse problem on the installation of my new engine - it's old enough that it was missing the mounting holes on the block for the PS pump bracket. I fabricated a mounting plate from diamond plate and attached it to the engine mount and exhaust manifold to bridge across and hold the bracket next to the block:

I notched the mounting plate I made deep enough so I could get to that back bolt for that exact reason - if I needed to remove the pump in the future.

Good luck getting it out!

Not on a stock FJ60.
This is a field mod done to make PS pump removal easier.

The PS pump doesn't need removed to R&R the manifolds & gasket.

If you really want to remove the PS pump, just remove it w/ it's bracket.
Three 14mm bolts into the side of the block, and one 14MM nut on stud on front of block.

If you are just trying to install a new in/ex gasket then the power steering pump can stay where it is.

thanks guys thats a big relief and yes I do need a fsm the haynes aren't very specific which makes it tough. is there any trick to getting out any of the bolts in the manifolds before I start working on it again tomarrow? just trying to save myself from being pissed off for an hour to find out i have to pull or loosen something hidden.

The only way to do it is to remove the bracket itself.
There are a handful of threads about this - its pretty straightforward with the exception of accessing some of the bolts and breaking them lose.
When I did mine it was in conjunction with redoing the smog pump which cleared up some room in there.
When I took mine off, I did what a lot of others have done -
Cut the back bolt in half so that if you ever have to remove it again you won't have to remove the bracket.

If you do a search for "manuals" there is a link to an old birfield.com site where you can download the factory manuals. The haynes/chiltons suck.
