Just got back from wheelin in my dad's new 97 cruiser that he just purchased (it has 35's and 4:56's). We were having a great time untill we started to hear a loud whining sound that was coming directly from the power sterring pump area. As we wheeled on, we got to some tougher areas that we needed to put lockers on and when we did the noise just got louder! It was also very difficult to sterr. I know that it is a bitch to sterr when front lockers are on, but this s*** did not want to turm at all! As we tried to turn, the noise would get louder and louder. We finally pulled over and checked the fluid level of the power sterring resivour. It was still full. We kept driving and started to notice that the more stress we would throw at the sterring (for example front lockers on), the noise would intesify. We finally decided to pull over again and look underneath cruiser and to our surprise, there was power sterring fluid everywhere. Only it was not leaking form the pump. Fluid was coming out of where the hose connects to the resivour. The power sterring hose clamp was nice and tight and did not have any holes in it; however, The fluid was coming out of the hose were the clamp is on. I guess the pump itself was not pumping out fluid when sterring was difficult (lockers on) I say this because back on the road, it was all back to normal. NO whining noises, no leaks! Only when wheelin and front lockers on! Do you guys think I need to replace pump itself, how much would the pump itself cost? I don't want this problem to happen anymore when wheelin. thanks.

Do a search on power steering pump and narrow the search for posts by IdahoDoug.

He mentioned before what happens when the ps pump whines as much as you described.

I've had ps pump issues, but never to the extent that your dad's rig has. It was probably due to air in the line...but that's just a guess on my part.
