I was wondering what is the best power steering conversion for a 1974 FJ40. Preferably the cheapest but best working. If there are many options let me know all of them please. My FJ40 is lifted about 4 inches with 34 inch super swamper ltb's on it. I think im going to need it. Let me know all the conversions that everyone knows about. Thanks.

Welcome.

Please go the the FAQ<---- this is a link and read away.

If you have more questions after that stop back with something specific.

As Poser says :flipoff2: Welcome to Mud (traditional newby welcome salute)

On this one there really is no short cut but to read the FAQ. Basically there are five common ps systems that folks have found effective to use on a 40 series rig. Each system has its plusses and minuses. The key is you need to know exactly what kind of rig you are building, how will you use it. What percentage on v. off road, etc. Once you have thought that piece through, pick your poison, a cup of coffee or a beer and read through the FAQ.

By way of example, for me I have a rig that is 70% on road 30% off and it is my DD. I am currently running 33s with a 4 inch lift but will be buying 35s for my next set. I went with the 60 series setup 100%, from 60 series big pattern knuckle steering arms and front end to 60 seiers ps gear box and pump. The Saginaw setup would have had to have been put in a bad place given where my winch etc is and the off road conditions here, not to mention a bear to find parts for in my region. For my application I felt the Scout box (reputed to be strong but really rare here), OEM 40 setup (still rare but obtainable locally) and the mini truck Hilux box (popular here because they are easy to obtain) weren't right for my application, my driving conditions and how and what I plan to uae the rig for, combination of highway driving and off road touring in really grinding and varied off road conditions here. ( I feel vindicated in this as another guy in my club went with the hilux ps gear box and blew it up trying to get out of a hole in a riverbed last week)
Again everything depends on the application.
Happy reading

Not always...I like Saginaw. And now I hear MR2 power steering is the next big thing.

I read some discussion regarding the MR2 setup. Most of what I read questioned whether a ps gear box and steering pump designed to steer a vehicle that runs considerably smaller tires than the "average" cruiser and weighs considerably less than the "average" cruiser in on the road conditions only, was up to the task of both on and off road work. The other point of discussion is that apparently there are some electronic components involved in the MR2 setup which concerned folks. Again I'm not an advocate pro or con. If you run a search here for MR2 steering you can read the same discussion that I did. I think again it all depends on how you plan to use your rig. Decide that and then it will quickly narrow your field down to the choice that makes the most sense for you.

Pighead read that thread as well, and was trying to make a funny...couldn't find the 'facetious" smiley.

Gotcha. I too have often looked for that particular smiley with no luck. This is the closest  but still isn't quite right. I wonder how we get a facetious smiley upgrade onto here?
