Greetings, this is my first post on this forum, but I have been reading it from time to time, and it is great and very helpful!

I was wondering if anyone can direct me to a power steering pump rebuild or seal replacement diagram or instructions from the various Toyota Land Cruiser manuals available for the 1987 model year. I have most of them, as this is my third long-term land cruiser, but for some reason, I can't find the specs or breakdown of replacing (most specifically) the front oil seal in any of my books.

From my search, most people here favor replacing the power steering pump with a different pump. I am a real stock person, so I am planning to just repair my leaking seal on my 1987 FJ60.

Thank you, and any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

I just bought a new one from Toyota of Dallas, from John. Price was decent. I figured if the first one lasted 25 years ,why not another. Mike

Thank you for the very fast and helpful replies! I'm actually hoping that somebody knows which page and book the power steering pump rebuild is located in "any" of the Toyota/Chiltons/Haynes manuals covering the 1987 FJ60. For instance, I also have been a long time vintage Mercedes driver, and I can view the exact breakdown and repair of the power steering pump in those manuals. I'm just surprised that I can't find it in my Toyota...etc. manuals...and hoped that somebody could lead me to the correct page/book. Thank you!

I recommend doing an entire rebuild kit. Which you can get from Toyota. The problem is that there is a brass bushing that supports the main shaft. If that bushing is worn it will allow excessive play which will cause a new seal to go bad real quick. And of course that bushing is not available from Toyota.

This is exactly the issue that I've had.....the bushing gets worn and no replacement is available. I've replaced a couple of the front shaft seals now and they last about a year before the leak appears again. I think this time around, I'll just source a new stock pump from the stealership. My 2 cents....

Im picking it up tomorrow, along with my usual pile of parts. I think it was 360. Mike

A decent machinist can make/adapt a new bushing. Problem is, it needs to be
an absurdly (something like .0003) tight fit on the shaft.

I got lucky with mine- it was still pretty tight.

And re- sealed, works pretty well for a street truck.

Great replies and thank you vipergrhd for the photos. Is that a seal installation FSM page that came with the kit in the photo? If so, that was what I was looking for! :)

Instructions are in the FSM - downloads in my sig-line.

But in practice, as said above, if there's a lot of miles on the pump the new seal won't last very long due to the worn bushing.

Your welcome Blue Elsie, that paper just tells you which O-ring goes where and don't worry if you have some left over parts not all of it will be used.Spike Strip has PDF download on an FSM if you like it has more detailed instruction on how to put it together.i will post a pic on how you can remove the brass cone in the housing,i soaked my pump housing in degreaser for a few hours and rinse it.:D

Nice job Spike you beat me by a few minutes,LOL.here is the pic.

I found it.

Thank you all! I think I need bifocals! The only book I had not looked through yet was the chassis/body, and I found the section I was looking for starting at 7-24!

Thanks for letting me know which manual to check Spike Strip, and for all of the other helpful information. I really appreciate it. :)
