Are the 2 rusted out metal tubes in front of my rad support dripping a brown fluid my power steering supply and return lines? How hard are the to replace? I'm a decent weekend wrencher.

common problem search for power steering cooler, I would replace it with a larger aftermarket cooler instead of the OEM.

If both are leaking, one of them is the pressure side..

While installing an aftermarket cooler in the return line has been done by many people, I would not suggest doing that on the pressure side... ;)

Good luck!

On many domestics there are only 2 lines, high/low and you would be correct.

the 80 is a little more complicated, there is a short high pressure line from the pump to the steering box, from then on it is low pressure, from the box it goes foreword in a rubber line and hits a metal stub line of the cooler, the cooler line travels under the radiator makes a few loops in front of the radiator (this is the cooler) and goes back under the radiator where it turns to a soft line and heads to the side of reservoir, from the bottom of the reservoir it travels down the large suction line to the pump.

The OEM cooler does not look very effective, it is expensive, prone to rust, and failure, IMO a good sized aftermarket transmission cooler (used as a PS cooler) is a better choice if your OEM one is having troubles.

i replaced these in both my 80s --

-- on the '94, did it by only removing underbody shielding -- needed to lift the body away from the farme (sucked)

-- on the '91, did it when replacing the rad (simple) --

I used OEM on both of them --

-- my 80s won't see usage like the POs gave them, so I doubt I will replace these items again --

:D

On the 60s, Toyota was thinking with these -- it's right in front of the rad, protected moreso from the elements --

I was searching and couldn't find it, but i'm sure someone posted a NAPA part # for the low pressure hose running from the bottom of the resevior to the pump/box (can't remember which it was running too, but it comes right off the bottom of the resevior.)?
