Hey folks, I just went through a bunch of work in my truck, including re-building the power steering pump, and putting new lines on it.

The pump wasn't leaking (lines were), but I figured while I had everything apart, I would re-build it. Pump looked brand new inside, I was very surprised.

So, I now finally have everything back together, and I started the truck. Ran a bunch of ATF into the system, doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere. I think I have all the air out, but I'm not getting any power assist. I had the front wheels off the ground, and steering back and forth, but the resistance in the wheel is the same whether the engine is running or not.

When I spun the wheel without the engine running, the reservoir overfilled and puked out the cap... Not sure why it would do that, I would expect I should be able to steer without the pump spinning without negative effects...

Thoughts? I know I don't haven the lines backwards, the fittings are different sizes.

Is ATF too heavy?
 
Assuming the pump rebuild went back together correctly, you still need to bleed the air...just keep turning lock to lock l/r with the tires in the air, not stopping at full lock for very long.
With the cap off and pump running, how foamy is the fluid in the res?
 
To answer the above, fluid is slowly swirling, a few bubbles, but not foamy...

To rule out the steering box (which was leaking heavily). Today I swapped the steering box off my parts truck. DAMN YOU TOYOTA why did you change the bolt pattern between '84 and '85!!!!!!!

Anyway, swapping the box didn't fix it. So.... Either I have two bad steering boxes, or the pump is weak and though fluid flows, it either doesn't have the power behind it, or it doesn't have sufficient flow...

my pump is doing the same thing, I must have installed the slipper springs wrong

so my slippers blew out everywhere and I have no idea how they were mounted the FSM was no help either

I installed my slippers with the key way pointed to the right side of the picture

I can't tell from the lighting in your picture, are they the same way as mine? (Post #10 in this thread)

From what I could find in the link above the photo in post 10, this is the correct way around, but perhaps it is wrong. I am also wondering if the pressure valve is assembled wrong. My steering seems to get tighter the further I turn it with the wheels on the ground. Off the ground it is the same lock to lock, but stiff.
 
MScatena: Just FYI, the FSM does show which is the correct way to install the slipper springs, at least in the Aug. 1980 manual. I didn't check the later ones. If you look at the Aug. 1980 manual (36044E) it shows the correct direction of slipper springs on pages 8-118 and 8-119.

I have the 84' FSM and I installed them in the direction the picture showed, but what it said to do was use the alignment symbols. My parts didn't have the alignment symbols so I followed the pictures. :bang:

I'll find out this weekend for sure if that was the issue.
 
Yep, borrowed another pump, and the slippers are the other way around... Works like a charm...
