I figured, just noting that for future people's searches really. I think honestly any quality ATF would be the way to go, but since the Toyota brand is within $1 of Mobile One and others I figured go with Toyota. Mine was very dirty too. @Felde 's flush technique was definitely needed.

Friend with experience with old Toyotas says use Dextron III

Stupid question, but why?
well, you can, but not permanently. they are both hydro fluids but the ATF has detergents and additives that help with things like heat, cavitation, oxidation, lubrication ect.

just like dexron I, dexron II is being phased out, the current iteration is dexron III and is backwards compatible.

Mine get Dex3 here, no issues over many years.

Found an unopened bottle of Dextron III.

I found Dexron II mineral at Amzon.
It is from the German brand Liqui Moly, though.
LIQUI MOLY 1145 Lenkgetriebeöl... Amazon product ASIN B004FPUMD6
Not sure it is available stateside.
Cheers Ralf

Hello,

The local Toyota shop uses this product and an equivalent -cannot remember the name now- from Bosch.

Now that you mention it, I have not seen Dexron around here for a while now.

Keep up the good work.
