power steering or hydraulic fluid? I can't find a the thread that discussed this and don't recall what was recommended. I wheel on some tough terrain and want something that is quality. is ATF good enough? I have ATF in there now.

Thanks :steer:

power steering fluid and automatic transmission fluid are both hydraulic fluids.

You know what's weird tho? My friend has a mini-backhoe/loader that has an all-hydraulic drivetrain and uses nothing but 30 weight throughout.

Cap on the resi says ATF. But the fluid in mine is not red and I doubt it's ever been replaced.

I know you're implying it's not really worth overthinking (and I agree), brake fluid is also a hydraulic fluid and I wouldn't recommend that in the PS system.

I keep a bottle of Honda ATF in the back my rig.

Premium synthetic power steering fluids or light hydraulic oils might have a slight edge over ATF in performance.

Factory fill is NOT ATF but that's the specified replacement fluid.

My PS system is running something from BG, a premium synthetic power steering fluid. Works fine, but I'm not particularly hard with my equipment.
