Driving my newly built truck this morning, I made a full lock turn to the right at a crawl and all of a sudden the wheel jumped to the left so hard it got yanked out of my hands. Immediately, there was a problem turning the wheels. It felt like I lost my power steering.

There was no noise when it slipped, no groaning after the fact, but I did notice fluid leaking from the engine bay. I was right near a Toyota Dealer and dropped it off there as this is beyond my skill set to diagnose and repair. Any ideas what this might be?

I'm gonna put my money on a blown PS hose.

I really hope that is the only problem. I would be thrilled...!! Until of course Toyota charges me $250 to replace the hose of .... then it will not be so thrilling.

I thought I had all new hoses put on this truck but I will have to check and see. I did have a hydraulic winch installed as well but I am not sure that has anything to do with it. I have never used the winch but I imagine lines tie in to the power steering system.

Hose blown you should have seen lots of oil.Broken belt? Mike

I did see fluid on the floor of the shop at Toyota. A decent amount ... it ran from front to back underneath the engine bay on the center/right side if you are facing the truck.

milemarker hyd winches hook up to steering system.well it is at the dealer ,what did they say was the problem and bill,or did they ,will call ya next week, what year is this, the winch power hose ,is the problem.when instaled something got striped, forced, then MICKEY MOUSED ,had a milemarker winch, and it did not come with everthing it needed to install,quick-fast-and done,so sent it back ,for 12v,is better,ya stall no power to winch,12v,at least ya can get out to a landing to work on it instead of where it is stuck,

Don't really seem to have one ... like I said, I am on my own here at the moment.

I would contact your mechanic.

Turned out to be the High Pressure Line....someone said to replace both. Is that recommended?

Toyota want $365 for the hose and $366 to install it. Sounds like I am the one getting hosed here...:) They also charged me $125 to diagnose it but I assumke that applies to the work fi I do it there.

They are not even sure that is the only problem. They have to replace that first to test the rest of the system.

My concern is that they will screw with mods that might be in teh way including the MileMarker Hydraulic Winch and Skid Plates. I do not trust Toyota to at all when it comes to a modified vehicle. I am trying to find out if any mods will be an issue but I can't get an answer on this.

I do not think so...but I did not check. I assumed everything was checked at some point during the build.

Did you ran your PS pump without PS fluid ( ATF ) ..?

Again, as I said earlier, you need to talk to the mechanic that installed your modifications. Toyota is not going to touch your hydraulic system with a mile long stick.

We have a high pressure hose in stock.

Napa has the after market HP hoses , made in USA for about $75 for each one. Onur is correct, you really need to get it to the person that worked on it last. It may be your best value, and peice of mind. even if you have it towed(if close).
Another solution is to take the hose to a hose shop and have new rubber put on the ends, some times turns out to be cheaper when doing two hose set ups. More for the DYI type of guy with resources near by.
Also if you knew that all the hoses were replaced, then you may have a warranty issue with the person or shop that did the install. If the hose is new, it should be replaced for nothing.
If the hose did blow and was new, there may be another problem creating this hose to blow.
Things to think about.

Rich, I think you are a little screwed here with the hydraulic winch issue. If you do not know how the lines were interfaced with the existing power steering system, then I can understand how Toyota does not want to touch it, or even if there rates are higher than normal. As soon as they touch the system they assume responsibility to fix it, and then they have to figure out what is going on with the system.

As recommended speak to the guys that did the mods on the truck. The hoses can be had from Toyota and replacing them is not that difficult. Replace both because if the failure was due to the age and condition of the hoses, both will be in the same condition. HP hose is the expensive one, the low pressure is not. As Robbie mentioned there are alternative fixes, but for you it would be better to source the Toyota hose and then have the guys that did the work install it.

Good suggestions. However, I tend to go with OEM Parts....it is just how I am. There may be no difference but in my mind it makes me feel better to use OEM Parts.

The people that did the work are 4 hours away by car. I cannot drive the vehicle due to a fuel leak ... which is dripping on my exhaust. I have been driving it this way for a week or two without realizing it but Toyota said it is very dangerous and I shoudl not drive it.

The power steering issue is another reason why I can't drive it. The fact I have no AC and does not help either. I also need a jumo to start the truck because both batteries are failing.

Not a good situation.

I will have to get it towed somewhere once I figure out how and when to get the work done. This sucks as it is my daily driver and I do not have another car. Bummer.

Toyota just quoted me the same ballpark price for the low pressure hose. $750 for both hoses.
